Asus A7S333 cpu speed settings

Can someone explain why the 'cpu speed' only has 1500 and 2000 as
options in the bios v1006?
1. I ran the AMDCPUID.exe from AMD and it says my CPU is AMD
Athlon(TM) 2400+ which was what i expected! However I can not set in
the BIOS 2400?!?

2. I tried 'Manual' setting and then selecting 133/33 for the cPU/PCI
and then 18.0x multiple, but it frooze. I could only get it the
multiple up to 16.0x

Any ideas
Thanks

It sounds to me like those are the two fsb options open to the board. 15 x
100mhz = 1500 and 15x133 = 2000 (give or take).

Not sure if this is what you mean, but these are the true speeds in mhz not
the Athlon xp+ rating (which is implying the 2000mhz amd cpu performs the
same as the (now older type) intel 2400mhz cpu - a confusing arrangement
but hence amd calling a 2000mhz cpu a 2400+).

You are intending to overclock the cpu - as that is what you are doing?

if so -

The xp2400+ is a 'b' core and has a default of 133 x 15 = 1995mhz (or 2000
as the bios calls it) and a default vcore of 1.65v. 2400mhz is about the
maximum the b core cpu can do

133 x 16 = 2128mhz is not much of overclock, so it makes me wonder if you
have you upped the vcore to allow for the increased speed at 133 x 18 =
2394mhz.

If I recall correctly (perhaps not) the A7S333 does not allow a vcore change
in the bios. This means you will have to use something like the wire
pin-mod to increase the vcore.

Maybe try using a 166fsb if the ram will allow and setting the multiplier
lower and trying to get to 2400mhz that way.

So I see this is a AMD marketing issue. The 2400+ is compatible to the
P4-2.4 hence the statement it is 2400+. However it really runs at
2000mhz.

I wasn't intending to overclock, just trying to figure out why the mb
only had the settings of [1-Manual , 2-1500, 3-2000mhz] setting and no
2400. Now it is clear.

Thanks for the info...

It is marketing, just like the Intel gutting of the original
P4's, by lowering the L1 cache to rush it to market,
following the +1Ghz P3 fiasco!
Personally, I found the Amd palomino and thorobred cores
to be conservatively underrated! The Barton's are overrated!
IMO

Yes - it gets lots of people, which I suspect is one of the reasons it is
done.

Well for someone not intending to overclock, you seem to have managed to
turn your xp2400+ into something more akin to a 2600+ ok

The fan attached to the heatsink on my Dec 2002 P4T533 northbridge
(i850) has died. It's plugged into the three pin "power supply fan"
header on the motherboard. What should I be looking to replace it
with when I make my trip to Fry's? Anyone got any high-quality
recommendations or perhaps a place to order one online to save me a
trip? Yeah, it's probably still under warranty, but what kind of a
piece of crap fan dies after only 10 months? I'm looking to replace
it with something that will last a few years.

Well, a few kind people have replied with a few URLs, but no one seems
to have this small "smart" fan. Am I going to have to get one from
ASUS? What's ASUS's US support phone number?
