Associating .JPGs with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Don Goyette

Following the advice in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307859
((307859) HOW TO: Change File Associations in Windows XP), Windows
Explorer now opens .JPGs with that application.

But, when I open a .JPG that is an email attachment, it uses Photoshop,
taking 10-15 seconds for that app to open every time.

When I changed the association, I checked the box that says: "Always use
the selected program to open this kind of file", but Windows continues
to use Photoshop, except when viewing from Windows Explorer.

So, is there a way to make Windows always use its own Picture and Fax
viewer on .JPGs?

On my system, jpg files always open with the Windows Picture and Fax viewer
whether from Windows Explorer, Outlook Express or Internet Explorer.
If I were you, I would check the file association using the tool from the
Control Panel. There really ought not to be any difference, but it pays to
check anyway.

First try the following:

Right click on a .jpg file and choose Properties.
Click the Photoshop Image tab and uncheck the
"Generate Thumbnails" button, then click OK.

Then have a look at this:

If by "tool from the Control Panel" you mean the File Types tab in
Folder Options, I had already set JPG, JPE and JPEG to be associated
with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer there and that did not correct the
problem.

Imgeditor did not fix the problem, either. I downloaded Imgeditor and
followed the instructions to no avail.

I'm using Thunderbird as my email client. I wonder if that's the problem.

I'm using Thunderbird as my email client.

Click the Tools menu in Thunderbird
Select Options, click Attachments tab
Click the "View & Edit actions" button
Remove JPG/JPEG entries from the list.

That list is empty. I had looked at that earlier and wondered how that
list ever gets populated. The only active button on that dialog box is
"Close". The "Remove action", "Change action" and "Clear" buttons are
disabled (grey).

You might try uninstalling Photoshop.
Double click a few jpegs and see if Win Pic & Fax Viewer opens them.
(No way can the images now open in PS.)
If something other than Windows Picture and Fax Viewer opens them,
change the file association
Now Reinstall PS.
See if that works.
