App failed to initialize... 0xc0000034

XP Profrssional; Ver 2002; SP-2; latest Defender upgrade & defs.
PC (mysteriously) downloaded "AntiVermins" spyware (Antivermins.com)...
finally removed all of it but for their icon in the system tray (right-click
or left-click immediately brings me back to their site). A very big
annoyance, but....
Booting-up I get errors on three apps: MSASCui.exe; msmsgs.exe; SetPoint.exe
and all have the same message: "Application failed to initialize properly
(0xc0000034)."
So.... Windows Defender no longer works; and when attempting to upgrade
Windows Media Player, guess what error message I get? Yup! "Application
failed to initialize properly (0xc0000034)."
Thought I'd be smart and invoke a System Restore... and discovered I haven't
any restore points (other than the most recent boot-up).
Q: How to restate these 3 apps upon start (I assume once fixed, Defender
will work); successfully install latest Media Player; remove unwanted icon in
system tray; create valid restore points?
I'll be forever thankful if somebody/anybody can offer assistance.

ps-pesky icon also displays an 'ALERT' every couple of minutes or so, taking
up about 25% of screen (then disappears after 10 seconds or so unless I click
on the "X").

Hello s2k,

FYI.- Run Ad-Aware to be sure any of the 3 detected variants of AntiVermins
in they data base are out of site.

Have a look at this article. It may be relevant to your problem with the
error 0xc0000034
Other than that, I'm about out of ideas, so good luck with it. Let us know
maybe someone else can conjure up something else to try.

If the malware remains even after you used Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Windows
Defender, Ewido and your anti-virus, you can scan with HijackThis. HijackThis
is an excellent tool to discover and disable hijackers, but it requires
expert skill to use. See below for HijackThis links, including sites where
you can post your HJT logs. Again, this is an expert tool and novices should
get help with it. I'm not kidding.

This is a Ron Kinner case beacuse I cannot find any good advice within any
forum without using HijackThis and to be carefully guided.
Get HijackThis.exe from:
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hjt199//HijackThis.exe
http://computercops.biz/HijackThis.html

Save it to C:\hjt (new folder) then Open it and select Scan and Save Log.
Note where you saved the log then send it to him as an attachment. Put
Hijack in the subject so he'll know it's not spam.

Alternatively you can post it on the Dell Forum ªt:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack

(if it wraps you can go tº:

http://tinyurl.com/ckuzq instead.)

Put Ron in the subject so he will see it. You do not need to have a Dell to
post but you will need to register.

You can repair Windows Defender.
First exit WD, Open WD main page, click the down arrow to the right of the
white question mark in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender;
using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click WD and click Change. Click Next, and then click Updªte.

Reboot

If you still have the same message, try this:

First exit WD, Open WD main page, click the down arrow to the right of the
white question mark in blue circle and then click Exit Windows Defender;
using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
Click WD and click Support Information and click Repair.

Reboot.
