Every time I try to run the spyware prog it always starts with the Setup
assistant and once I get through this the program seem to work OK! except for
the auto updater, which I set to run on System startup but as I say next time
I run the program I have to go through this again. Even if I do not alter any
of the default settings it will still run through the setup assistan on the
next reboot any help would be greatly recived TIA

Proceeding as follows has fixed this for others:

1) Uninstall Microsoft Antispyware
2) delete \program files\microsoft antispyware and all subfolders. You will
lose access to any quarantined items, history, and custom settings.
3) reinstall Microsoft Antispyware, taking care to be sure you are using the
current version download, and that you are logged in as administrator.

terrific--this fix seems like swatting a fly with a hammer, but it is easy
to describe, and does the job. In reality, the problem is probably in one
or two of the .GCD files, but I've never had a test case to figure out the
absolute minimum you'd need to change to fix the problem.

That is one that we don't have a workaround for, I'm afraid. If Microsoft
Antispyware won't take care of it in safe mode, with the help of your
updated antivirus--I'd go for other help. You'll see a number of programs
recommended repeatedly in these groups.

That was not real clearly written.

The problem with sending the suspected spyware report to spynet is one that
we don't have a workaround for.

Additionally, if cleaning with Microsoft Antispyware and your updated
antivirus, in safe mode--is not doing the job, seek further help. One
source of such help is an online scan.

You can get Microsoft's latest antivirus definitions by doing a full service
scan here:

Trend Micro targets spyware as well as viruses with their scanner:

Yup--The mechanism of keeping the old files there has a good purpose--the
intent is to conserve--you can do an uninstall/reinstall and keep current
definitions and all your settings, quarantined items, etc. However, it
bites you sometimes.

It is possible that one of the two repair mechanisms in add or remove
programs for this product might fix this issue--but I think I'd tried those
long since in threads here without luck.
