Another installation is in progress...

I'm unable to install or uninstall anything on my computer. Each time I
try, I get the message "Another installation is in progress. Complete that
installation before proceeding with this install".

I've already done the research on this, and the only thing suggested is to
view, manipulate or change the regkey
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress".
However, I do not have that key! Within "Installer", all I have is
"Folders", "Products", "ResolveIOD", "Secure", "UpgradeCodes" and
"UserData".

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried rebooting?

What was the last thing you installed? How about removing it temporarily?

Since you are missing a registry key, you can add it and set it to whatever
means no installation in progress. I do not know what the key or its value
should be, however. Perhaps others can help you there.

Rebooting doesn't help. Attempting to uninstall anything results in the
same error message.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. The problem corrected itself somehow,
so I didn't apply your fix, but I'll keep it in the event it happens again.
