Annoying message

How is thid different from this (which you snipped)?:

<quote>
To disable completely the balloon tips, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
and create a new dword called EnableBalloonTips. Set its decimal value
to 0.
</quote>

Mine looks better :)

Did you try THIS one?:
"Ben Cooke: I know it's a bit obscure, but in WinXP you can choose which
notification icons appear by right-clicking the notification area and
selecting "Custom Notifications..." "
{note- click a blank spot in the notification area}
from this page:

http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2005/01/10/349894.aspx

It may be significant/relevant to the problem that the particular
annoyance message I mentioned does not appear in the list. Ones
that do appear in the list are the familiar (and desired):

"Wireless Network Connection (my ssid) Speed 54.0 Mbps ..."
that I get when hovering the mouse over the connection icon.

Also listed is the:
"Wireless Network Connection Not Connected ..."
with the red X in the connection icon that is also desirable and
useful when applicable.

But the annoying (and useless) yellow baloon pop up message isn't
listed at all.

There's a OT thread right now on alt.freeware concerning sp 3, and
I might post a question there on whether or not the bug has been
fixed in the lated Betas of sp 3.

The last version I tested was Feisty Fawn (I think). Couldn't get my Linksys
WUSB54G (desktop PC) and Intel 2200BG (laptop) + WPA2 to work. So I stopped
right there and went back to WinXP. I'd love to give it another shot if I
can get WiFi to work. Does Hardy Heron (latest version?) support WPA2
security btw?

I don't know as I don't do wireless. You can either try Hardy and see if
it works or ask on the Ubuntu forums where someone might have the same
configuration as you. alt.os.linux.ubuntu

Maybe :) Try this:
- Click on Start and then on Run.
- In the open box type regedit and then click OK.
- Click on the plus (+) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Software.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Microsoft.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Windows.
- Click on the plus (+) next to CurrentVersion.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Explorer.

Here's where the mistake is:
- Click on the folder that says Advanced.

The new Dword goes directly under \Explorer
not under \Explorer\Advanced
- Click on Edit, select New, and choose DWORD Value.
- Name the new DWORD Value EnableBalloonTips.
- Double-click this new entry, set the value to 0.
- Fill in the dot next to Hexadecimal.
- Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer normally.
- You (should) have now disabled the balloon tips in the system tray.

Good luck :)

My good luck came from a poster on alt.comp.freeware who suggested
trying TweakUI for XP. Under Taskbar and Start Menu there's a check
box named Enable ballooon tips. Uncheck, Apply, reboot. Haven't seen
the annoying message yet after many hours of connection time both
yesterday and today.
