On Win XP sp2 with a wireless adapter card I often get a pop up
balloon with the message "Wireless Network Connection is now
connected". It doesn't disappear. I have to click it off.
Googling the above message I found that this is a common
annoyance. Of the many suggested fixes I found, none of
them work. So my question is ... is there a method of stopping
this annoyance once and for all that actually works?
Ok, I forgot to mention that it's XP Pro sp2
Here's the things I've tried that have no effect:
***************************************
In the registry, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
There should be a dword called BalloonTip. Create it if it's not
there. The lowest its value,
the shortest time the tip will be shown.
I dropped the time to 1 and several other low values including 0 to no
effect.
To disable completely the balloon tips, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
and create a new dword called EnableBalloonTips. Set its decimal value
to 0.
I also set all these to 0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\ShowInfoTip
KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\FolderContentsInfoTip
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\StartButtonBalloonTip
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\tips\Show
Also tried:
1. Open Group Policy, then load the group policy you want to apply
the change to.
Note: On a computer that is not a part of a domain you can set
this feature locally by running
GPEDIT.MSC from the Run command (only on XP Pro).
2. Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates >
Start Menu & Taskbar
3. Double-click Remove Balloon Tips on Start Menu Items and select
Enabled.
4. Ok all the way out.
The only other "fix" I found had to do with altering some timing on
the router so that the message supposedly wouldn't pop up that often
.... but I'm not interested in that. I want to find out if it's
possible to fix the Windows problem ... or determine that it's a
bug in XP (which I suspect it is).
