Annoying message

A

Art

On Win XP sp2 with a wireless adapter card I often get a pop up
balloon with the message "Wireless Network Connection is now
connected". It doesn't disappear. I have to click it off.

Googling the above message I found that this is a common
annoyance. Of the many suggested fixes I found, none of
them work. So my question is ... is there a method of stopping
this annoyance once and for all that actually works?

Just asking for "a fix that actually works" is kind of silly unless you have
said what you have already tried. Otherwise you have to expect that many of
the suggestions to be those things that did not work for you.

Not silly at all ... I want to find out if anyone who actually has had
this problem found a fix. I'm not going to bother listing all the
alleged fixes that don't work since that would take quite a bit of
time and effort.

I know what will fix it for good: reformat the hard drive and put a real
operating system on it. I like Ubuntu; check it out at:

http://www.ubuntu.com/

It's free and comes with access to over 23,000 free programs.

Then don't be surprised if nobody here wants to suggest any fixes,
since you may have already tried them and they didn't work. That would
take quite a bit of time and effort.

Last version I tried didn't have provisions for my Linksys wireless
adapter.

What version was that? The newer versions support more wireless than before.

Look, it's very simple. If you don't know a fix that actually works
then don't bother to respond. Why is that so difficult to grasp?

The last version I tested was Feisty Fawn (I think). Couldn't get my Linksys
WUSB54G (desktop PC) and Intel 2200BG (laptop) + WPA2 to work. So I stopped
right there and went back to WinXP. I'd love to give it another shot if I
can get WiFi to work. Does Hardy Heron (latest version?) support WPA2
security btw?

A positive fix is to pull the plug on your PC. I guarantee that message will
not pop up again.

I have a fix...shut the bloody computer off...you'll never be
annoyed with solutions that don't work...or annoying replies
either for that matter.

A bit of civility might find you an answer though.

Ok, I forgot to mention that it's XP Pro sp2
Here's the things I've tried that have no effect:
***************************************
In the registry, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
There should be a dword called BalloonTip. Create it if it's not
there. The lowest its value,
the shortest time the tip will be shown.

I dropped the time to 1 and several other low values including 0 to no
effect.

To disable completely the balloon tips, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
and create a new dword called EnableBalloonTips. Set its decimal value
to 0.

I also set all these to 0

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\ShowInfoTip
KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\FolderContentsInfoTip
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\StartButtonBalloonTip
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\tips\Show

Also tried:
1. Open Group Policy, then load the group policy you want to apply
the change to.
Note: On a computer that is not a part of a domain you can set
this feature locally by running
GPEDIT.MSC from the Run command (only on XP Pro).
2. Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates >
Start Menu & Taskbar
3. Double-click Remove Balloon Tips on Start Menu Items and select
Enabled.
4. Ok all the way out.

The only other "fix" I found had to do with altering some timing on
the router so that the message supposedly wouldn't pop up that often
.... but I'm not interested in that. I want to find out if it's
possible to fix the Windows problem ... or determine that it's a
bug in XP (which I suspect it is).

You forgot one:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSMBalloonTip"=dword:00000000

Rinse, lather, repeat.

Whatever that means :) Any other ideas?

Maybe :) Try this:
- Click on Start and then on Run.
- In the open box type regedit and then click OK.
- Click on the plus (+) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Software.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Microsoft.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Windows.
- Click on the plus (+) next to CurrentVersion.
- Click on the plus (+) next to Explorer.
- Click on the folder that says Advanced.
- Click on Edit, select New, and choose DWORD Value.
- Name the new DWORD Value EnableBalloonTips.
- Double-click this new entry, set the value to 0.
- Fill in the dot next to Hexadecimal.
- Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer normally.
- You (should) have now disabled the balloon tips in the system tray.

Good luck :)
