An unknown error has occurred

Here is what I did, which may be a bit more lengthy than what most people
need to do due to the Vista user problems my version has. Most people should
be able to go to Computer, C Drive, Users, select their user name, and see
the AppData file from there, and I cannot.

I went to start
in the start search area (just above start) I entered C:\Users\my user
name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail (note that Windows Mail must be
written as two separate words)
I clicked on Windows Mail at the top of the list page
I selected WindowsMail.MSMessageStore and pasted a copy in my documents
(just in case)
then deleted the file
I opened the Backup folder
then Opened the New folder
Deleted the WindowsMail.MSMessageStore in this folder
Closed out of everything and then upon opening Windows Mail it restores
itself and also gives you several "restore" folders under the default folders.
I then proceeded to input my emails into the folders by copy and pasting (I
did notice a note online while searching that stated it is not a good idea to
copy and paste several emails at once as this action can cause another
"ghost" email, it also stated that doing anything too fast can cause this
problem.)

I hope this helps. I am more than happy to save anyone and everyone from
having the problems I've had.

First of all, your CapsLock key is stuck. Please unlock it.

Your "reliable source" is misinformed. Although Windows Mail may have
some bugs, Vista mostly works very well. Unless you have specific issues
with Vista, it is not advisable to go back to Windows XP. For one thing,
the newer computers developed for Vista don't have XP drivers.

On the other hand, Vista is so full of bugs and Microsoft is so
unresponsive, that it makes sense to send it back to the vendor and request
a refund until they come up with quality and reliable product, if ever.

">>>>as above

I have read and tried above all with interest... but
A) it will not allow me to rename : Windows Mail to anything .. access
denied,
and
B) I really have heck of a lot of emails in REALLY nicely organized files,

is there any way of preserving them in this structure?

Will I loose it to one big bundle of OLD mail, IFF I ever move 'em into this
elusive 2ndary folder?.. and reboot micromail to restart anew?

No way of 'burning' this one locked email in out folder that is jammed up?

By the way.. as we are TRASHING microsoft and Vista... I would like to point
out that I am to blame for this as I put in a secondary anti'virus
(iolo-sysMech7) and had in/out email checked as default so I believe the
error lies there and caused the lock up..Xing with Vista and it's running of
Defender..
So I am at fault and will fall on my sword... NOT THE OS FAULT I MESSED UP
now I am paying for it...
so I ask again,, any way of saving existing format? at all?
cuz saving copies or not,, I shiver at deleting and trying to reload anew...
bad memories with Netscape ....

Don't try and rename anything. Close WinMail and do a CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to see
the processes running and endtask WinMail.exe. Then move the message store
directory contents to another directory under Documents. Once you do that
then WinMail will start "clean" and then you can use File | Import |
Messages to import the messages from the directory to which you moved
everything. There is a glitch in the import so see
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm2wm . The import will preserve the folder
hierarchies, but they will all be under "Imported Folder". You should then
be able to move them back under Local Folders, but I haven't tested that.

Hi all,
I have been reading all your posts, and finally resolved the issue on my
computer. First I moved the message store Tools/advanced/maintenence. I
created a new file called New message store in my documents. This did nothing
until I went into my "new message store" file and found
"windowsmails.msmessagestore". I renamed this file and saw that another was
created automatically without me doing a thing. I closed this up and my
opened win mail and it was a clean slate.

I previously had a message stuck in my outbox. I couldn't send any e-mails,
only recieve them. I couldn't delete it, or move it or do anything with it at
all.

Now its fixed, I hope this helps someone else, this was so frustrating and I
am not computer savvy.

This is finally the answer I need -- THANKS SO MUCH! I reopened up Win Mail
and can send -- all my addresses are still there too. But what do I do with
the "recovered" messages that now appear, where all my folders moved. Do I
need to copy them into new folders and delete the old ones, or can I just
move the folders around? Also what does Steve mean about deleting both files
(his response to your post)? Again, thank you for posting this and giving
such great directions. I would say you are pretty savvy.

Hi Tracy,
My explanation wasn't very clear, On your e-mail click TOOLS, then ADVANCED,
then MAINTENANCE. Then a box called Store folder.

Hi Gail,
I have just been deleting those e-mails. I luckily saved anything I needed
before I did this, I would just try and move them around I guess, or keep
them in a seperate spot if that doesn't work. I honestly don't know what
Steve means, I only found one message store. Possibly he means the folder I
moved when in maintanence and then the actual message store I had to change
later. No idea, like I said, I'm not compuer savvy.

I closed this up and my
opened win mail and it was a clean slate.

I think you only have to delete the old store, but the problem remains
that all your old emails need to be replaced manually.

Come on Microsoft - this bug should be a priority.

Click Tools on the Menu.
Click Options.
Click Advanced.
Click the Maintenance button.
Click the Store Folder button.

One can use File | Import | Messages and point to the location from where
the files were relocated.

Don't expect any help from MS anytime soon.

You can move the recovered messages back into their folders. But I suggest
when people have to do this that they move everything to another directory
and then once they get it working, then use File | Import | Messages and
point to that directory to get them back into the message store.

There are 2 WindowsMail.MSMessageStore files. One is in the topmost
directory of the message store and one is under \backup\new .

I think there is an easier way.

If you have custom folders, create them first. Now go to the root of
the backed up messages, do a search for *.fol and delete them all.

Now simply drag the contents of each folder directly into the
appropriate folders in the Windows Mail window.
