If you just download it, and don't install it afterwards, it won't work.
Also,
you may have guessed wrong about whether you have a 32-bit version of
Vista or a 64-bit version, so if the first one refused to install, download
and install the version for the other version of Vista. If both refuse to
install, you may need the instructions in the WORKAROUND section
at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Also, this is a temporary fix even if it works. If you want a more
permanent
fix, what is any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them occasionally
cause such problems.

Download and install this hotfix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version of the hotfix first.
Certain common antivirus programs, such as most of those from
Norton or McAfee, tend to cause stuck messages and other problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately, so if you have such a
program, remember where to find the hotfix, and hope it will install
again if you need it again. A recent version of the Trend antivirus
program also causes assorted problems in Windows Mail.

I followed this sequence and it emptied the Delete Folder. It did not
eliminate the message in the In Box.

I have tried EVERYTHING. The problem is in the INBOX, not the deleted items
folder. I don't want to delete EVERYTHING in my inbox, only the ones I DON'T
want and they won't go away. I went to the "fix" and downloaded it two times
on two different occasions. Nothing happens. I've tried the alt>e>y and it
tells me it's going to delete everything in my deleted items folder.

It's the INbox. Do the Microsoft folks ever read these forums?????????
I've had Vista for 13 months and have had nothing but problems!!!!! This is
NEW problem. Until yesterday, Windows mail was "just ok" considering it
closes down when it feels like it and sometimes won't allow me to attach a
file. Other than that, I'd say it's a little better than a piece of crap!
However, not much better!!!!

Sorry, I am so frustrated with this operating system and have spent a
fortune on it.

Anymore suggestions????? Sure would appreciate them. I've had Windows
since Version 3.1 and this is the worst OS I've ever used!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It doesn't delete everything in the Inbox, and doesn't always delete even
the previously undeletable messages. It should make them deletable
if it doesn't delete them, though. It's labelled as for messages stuck in
the Outbox, but also works in other folders.

Just downloading the hotfix doesn't help. You have to install it after you
download it before it does anything useful. If it refuses to install, you
may have guessed wrong about whether you need the 32-bit version
or the 64-bit version, so try the other one also.

I've seen no sign anyone from Microsoft is still reading this newsgroup
in the last few months. They read some of the other newsgroups, though.

Windows Mail has problems attaching files when they are still open in
some other program.

Do you mean you haven't tried Windows ME, the version I've often
seen described as the worst version of Windows?

Problems in Windows Mail are often caused by interference from
antivirus programs, although such problems often take months to
show up. What if any antivirus programs do you have? Some other
programs, such as Google toolbar and a program with SMS in its
name also cause problems in Windows Mail. Do you have either
of those programs installed?

Microsoft doesn't read this newsgroup because Windows Mail is
considered obsolete. Microsoft released the replacement program,
Windows Live Mail, last November.
If the suggestions from the other responders don't fix your problem,
I advise you upgrade to the improved Windows Live Mail:

Hi Steve:

I've done everything suggested here and nothing worked. Deleting an email
became too much of a frustration and the time spent was wasted. Not worth it!

I finally downloaded Thunderbird2 and imported all my emails and address
book via cvs file and have been up and running for the past couple hours. If
Microsoft fixes Windows Mail, I might go back to it, however I am attracted
to Thunderbird more as I use it because it auto-fills, regardless of the time
lapse. With Windows Mail, I can't even send an email to myself without going
through the whole contact list. If I don't use a person's address for about
a week, the address won't auto-fill and I have to use the address book again
and it's a pain. Thunderbird is more like Outlook Express but has some extra
wonderful features as well. Email is very essential for my business. I use
it constantly.

I appreciate all the suggestions here and wish everyone more success than I
had. Microsoft should be advised of these problems. Their fixes are not
really fixes, except, perhaps, for a few. If Windows Mail is so good, why
does Microsoft have so many areas with "how to's?" It just doesn't make any
sense to me. As I first mentioned, I've had Windows since 3.1 and never had
any problems with the entire operating system or software. This is all new
to me and I don't like all the frustrations Vista has caused. My time is
worth more than trying to fix something or worrying about the Blue Screen of
Death which has happened three times. I wish I had a dollar for all the
hours, days, weeks since February 2007 that I spent on the phone with
Microsoft. I save NOTHING on the hard drive. I still have XP but can't
install it in this computer. What a shame!!!!!!! Or should I say "sham?"

Thanks again. You folks have been very nice. (btw...I did install service
pack 1)

One more question. Does Windows Mail need to be uninstalled? How about
contacts, etc.?
