"An Unknown Error Has Occurred"

A message showed up in my Inbox today that can't be deleted. WM says "An
Unknown Error Has Occurred" when I try to delete it.

I've run WMUtil and done a database repair and compact. Doesn't help.

Any ideas?

Mark it as read & ignore it, is your best/easiest option at this stage.

Microsoft has abandoned all development and bug fixing for Windows Mail,
since they will be releasing a replacement program, Windows Live Mail,
later this month.

That seems weird, since Windows Mail is built into Vista and Vista is only 6
months old...

Vista, as it is now known, has been in development for years.

Seems weird to me also, but that's what they announced on May 6.

Windows Mail was introduced rather late in the Vista beta program,
so I think it was meant as a stop-gap filler only.

This is pure conjecture on your part Gary?

Whilst what you say appears to be fact at the moment.

I am thinking that once WLM, (Only available via D/L), is finalised, then
'resources' and attention to the many problems that exist within WM in
Vista, will start to be addressed? Wishful thinking maybe, but this mail
program can be made to work, given time.

Remember that the new mail client, WLM is a cross-platform application, and
it reintroduces Hotmail access to millions of users, I think the latter is
the priority as far as M$ is concerned? (pure conjecture). No graphical ad's
included they say, but their are other kinds of ad's that bring in revenue
:)

Windows Live Mail is likely to be in beta status for many months.
By the time it is finished, the remaining Windows Mail users (if any)
will be thoroughly demoralized...
Once WLM is done, will Microsoft redirect those resources into
fixing up Windows Mail? Who knows, but I wouldn't hold my
breath. If WLM is successful, its superior feature set (Hotmail
access, etc.) will draw users away from Windows Mail, to the
point where Microsoft would be foolish to continue supporting
two similar free mail clients.

I'll be the exception to prove that rule.

So, does this mean that we will be able to fix the messages that are STUCK in
our inboxes and in our deleted boxes, by simply installing patches for this
program, or will we have to install a new program and uninstall this one?

I can't even get my "Contacts" to work properly when needed. This is so
frustrating!!

As I understand it, no patches or fixes will be released.
You would need to install the new program (Windows Live Mail).
But wait for the experts to check it out first.
You cannot uninstall Windows Mail because it is an integral part
of Vista.

I have had the same problem, with my outbox. Here is how I solved it, twice
now. The techincian at DELL walked me through it. Go to "my computer".
Then to "users", then to "local". Click on "win mail" and delete this. This
deletes all messages in win mail. They can be saved first, by saving the
whole "win mail" to a folder, before deleting. After deleting, the mail
server will have to be re-set up. But is does fix the propblem. And not too
difficult. Hope this helps.

I left out one important step. After going to my computer, app data, local,
then click in microsoft. This then will get to the place where windows mail
can be deleted.

Sorry, I see I was a bit bumbling in my suggestions. The sequence is: my
computer, c drive, users, users name, app data, local, microsoft. This
leads to the windows mail file.

They never supported OE, so its no big deal for them, as they will just
continue in that vein for WM, as they have so well shown so far.

I don't know what your source of information is, but that is not the case.
I would suggest we wait until MS says a bit more about the situation before
making blanket statements, as you have been doing, that have little basis in
fact.

I'm lost. I follow through my computer, c drive, users, user name, but then
nothing. I can't find app data, local microsoft, etc.
If I do this, will the windows mail program still be there? I just have to
re-set it up like I originally did, correct?

I dont know if it will still be there cause I called DELL and they never
offered me this idea the just shoved me off on MS who shoved me back off on
DELL. But to find the app data file you will have to go to folder options and
turn on the show hidden folders option under the advanced tab.
