Always ask me before... grey

Hi to all !
First of all, I am translating from an OS that uses Italian, so forgive if
some words are not exact.
I am using an old laptop, Win 2000 pro SP4 and IE6. I use an administrator
account; my privecy settings, in IE6, are medium.
When I try to download some file, a window appears, asking "What do you want
to do etc.. Open, save, ecc.
There is the last row in this window, saying "Always ask me before etc..."
but I can't uncheck it, it is "grey", and in some manner, locked. This
happens with PDF, JPG, EXE and every type of file.
OK, I will never uncheck it, I want to be warned before I download or run
anything, but... Why I can't uncheck ?
Thanks in advance !

I'm bouncing this back to Win2K General: A Windows (not an IE) setting or
GPO is causing the behavior IMHO.

Try this:

Control Panel | Folder Options | File Types (tab) | select/highlight PDF
extension | (click on) Change | uncheck the "Always use..." option | OK your
way out.

Repeat for other extensions (e.g., EXE; JPG; DOC) as needed.

Reboot.

Thank you fir the help. I tryed to follow your suggenstion but I can't
uncheck the "Always use..." option, it is grey. I have tried with PDF
extension, DOC, XLS. They are all "locked". My account is in the
administrators group, and it has complete control of the PC (or at least it
should !).
So, where is the problem ?

Dave, there is no 'NoFileAssociate' key in my registry; alla I have in the
HKLM key is the following:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\ActiveDesktop]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\ActiveDesktop\AdminComponent]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\NonEnum]
"{BDEADF00-C265-11D0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Ratings]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
"dontdisplaylastusername"=dword:00000000
"legalnoticecaption"=""
"legalnoticetext"=""
"shutdownwithoutlogon"=dword:00000001

Anyway, in File Type tab, I can do anything, I can change files association,
icons and so on; the only choice that is greyed is the "always use this...";
anyway, if I use another system, then the option "always use etc" is
selectable. Right click on any file, "Open with" and in the window I can
choose any program; then I can check "Always use..." or not.

Thanks for the help; yes, I know that this is an old PC, but I am a
Geriatric MD, so my PC must meet the geriatric standards... !
