all settings/icons have been lost/changed

Hi... New to the group and new to XP, be gentle! :)

I installed XP [from W98last week. And have spent a little while setting
it all up as I would like, but this morning I logged on and everything
had been 'reset'.

That is... The administrator name had reverted, all my desktop icons
rearranged themselves, the mouse hardware was rediscovered, number lock,
even the MS welcome/tour reappeared, etc. It almost appears like I've
never used the machine/set-up before!

Any ideas?

Yesterday, as I was getting irritated by the info balloons, I installed
TweakUI for XP - and tweaked, what I thought, were fairly minor things
in addition to the balloon setting. Of, course this could be
coincidence, but thought I'd mention it.

So frustrating... And everything had been going so well! : 7

TIA :)

Grrrrr... Things just got a little worse.

Although Firefox is on the desktop, I've just opened it and it has
nothing in there!... The chosen skin is gone, the add-ons are gone, no
bookmarks...

What on earth has happened here?!
