adsl problems with windows XP

For a few weeks now i have had no broadband access. We had a power cut
whilst connected to internet, and ever since every time i turn pc on there is
only the power light on on my sagem modem. I have had the lines checked by
BT, have had a new modem and filters etc, have taken pc back to original
factory settings, but still no broadband access. When i plug in the USB the
mouse starts to stick a bit, but that is plugged into a PS2 port. Both light
appear on when i first start the PC, but as soon as it loads windows xp home
edition the adsl light goes off. If i try to connect it says error 680, no
dial tone. Technical support from ISP, and PC people have been no good as
one is blaming the other. Please advise.

Go into device manager and look for any entries under USB that have yellow
excamation marks. Report results.

Have you had anyone test the DSL connection (onsite)? If the ADSL light is
out then it is not synchronised to the DSL Access Multiplexer at the
exchange. Can BT synchronise with the DSLAM from your house?

Did you replace the cable between the moden and filter?

Have gone into device manager, and the USB WAN ADAPTERr is present with no
exclamation marks next to it. BT came into the house and plugged their
laptop and modem into all my sockets and was able to connect to internet
straight away. Have replaces all cables too. Does BT have to synchronise or
is it the ISP provider, cant i do it from my end.

Did BT test your modem onsite?

Does the telephone cable from the modem go to the unfiltered socket (rather
than the filtered) of the filter? N.B. Only telephones require filtered
output.

Have you tried removing the filter and using an RJ11 to BT cable to plug
directly into the telephone socket?

Hi, yes tried both of those suggestions, and BT didnt test the modem as it
isnt theirs, they just tested the line, but i have had a new modem since and
im still getting the same trouble.

P.S. Given the modem can't connect to the exchange do you know someone else
with a DSL connection?

If so then take the modem to their place. Remove the RJ11 from the back of
their modem (eliminates possible faults in your cable) or router and connect
to your modem. Plug your modem's USB cable in to their computer to provide a
power source. Does the ADSL led illuminate and stay illuminated??

Dont know anyone else with DSL, but have plugged modem into another PC and
both lights stay on. Have re-installed software also.

Have you considered that your computer was damaged by the power cut?
Get another computer and setup your DSL.
You have checked everything but the computer.
Consider buying a UPS.

Yes i have considered that, but what fault could it make. The USB ports work
with other equipment such as printer and webcam, the modem is a new one, with
new cables. Technical support for the PC think its a modem problem, ISP
think its a computer problem. PC was only bought in January2005.

I would simply dump the USB modem and buy a router. Plugs into NIC (network
card) - you should have onboard ethernet in a near new PC. No software
required - configure router by telnet or web interface.

P.S. The purpose of the ADSL led is simply to display status re: connection
to the exchange DSLAM so whatever ever PC it is connected to should NOT make
any difference which makes your situation very confusing.

i had a similar problem.my pc worked for 6 months no problem.then after a
power cut it started playing up.i was advised by a technician that my printer
was causing it so i bought a new one. it wasnt that.after phone calls to
technicians it turned out to be a power supply problem to the usb ports. the
motherboard only puts out a certain amount of milliamps if the usb devices
plugged into the pc pull more than the board gives out it causes all sorts of
problems.i resolved it by buying a powered usb hub and installing all my usb
devices thru it.my motherboard put out 500ma and my adsl modem on its own was
using 500ma. hope this helps.
