Adobe Reader - WARNING

Certain forms are ``enabled'' so as to allow saving of the form _with_ the
entered form data --- these only work on v5 (probably 5.1) or later.

Adobe Acrobat Reader v5 will handle pdf v1.4 which may not load in Adobe
Acrobat Reader 4 if certain features are used. It also has better support for
copying formatted text, esp. ligatures in custom-encoded fonts.

Adobe Reader 6 is a merging of Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe eBook Reader (the
latter based on the GlassBook Reader). It supports pdf v1.5, and a couple of
other formats (most notably some kind of PhotoShop Elements photo album if
memory serves). It gains a neat ``library '' / ebook management system, but
also an advertising tile in the button bar.

William

It also *requires* Internet Exploder v 5.

Personally, I prefer using Acrobat eBook Reader for viewing PDF files. Much
easier to use than Acrobat Reader.

But with all the security concerns regarding Acrobat products, I have
switched to GsView and Ghostscript on my Windows PC's for viewing PDF's.
Not as pretty but works great!

Adobe Reader leaks data like a sieve

By INQUIRER staff: Friday 05 March 2004, 07:36 AN AUSTRALIAN security
consulting firm has told users Acrobat Reader version 5.1 has a highly
critical vulnerability that could lead to the leaking of data.

NGSSoftware found a data format buffer overflow in which could
potentially be exploited to compromise a user's system.

Apparently the vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within
the debugging functionality when parsing documents in the XML forms
data format (".xfdf").

A hacker using the flaw could trick a users into looking at a doctored
XFDF document which could trigger a buffer overflow.

NGSSoftware contacted Adobe about the flaw and been told that the
latest version of the reader, 6.0, did not suffer from it. It has
recommended to all its clients that they upgrade immediately. µ

Regards
Gordon

FYI

Version 6.0.1. of Acrobat Reader was just released today.

surely there were bugs to be fixed
as the saying goes, fixing existing bugs means replacing them with new ones
in this view version 602 is likely to follow

It's the date they listed it (and like most services, they keep moving the date
forward). Some people only look at the most recent listed programs. I
downloaded 6.0.1 on 12/27/2003.

Also, with Acrobat Reader versions 5 and 6 you can filling forms and
saving forms with another approach...

You can immediately convert all your forms (and any documents in any
format) to
fillable and (locally!!!) saveable in Acrobar Reader. This is a free
service from http://www.FillinDocs.com and http://www.savePDF.com.
