Add/Remove Windows Components

R

RFJ

I'm trying to install IIS.

However, whenever I hit the Add/Remove Windows components option in Add/Remove I get an error message as follows :

"Setup was unable to open information file fp40ext.inf."

"Contact your system administrator."

"The specific error code is 0x2 at line 2088999411."

Things I've done so far :

a.. I've got full admin rights and have tried on another account with full admin rights - same problem.
b.. Some of the previous solutions posted over the last couple of years (eg changing a registry setting) don't seem to work as the suggested steps don't follow what I see on the screen.
c.. I've deinstalled front page (to which the inf file refers) but still get the same error message

The OS, XP Pro, is fully up to date with patches and security fixes. The pc is virus free. Normal AV, spyware and firewall software are operating. The PC apart from this is fine and stable.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

TIA

Sounds like it's corrupted. If this doesn't work you might want to poke
about in some of the server groups.

Start
Run
Type "sfc /scannow" (no quotes and note the space)
Press enter
Wait a minute
No, another one...
Ah, there it goes... Now insert the CD when it asks.
Now it's going to also autoplay probably and try to open the installer
package for XP so either close that or ignore it
It's going to then do a system file check and replace any corrupted system
files
Grab a cup of coffee
Wait for it to finish

No luck I'm afraid. At the end of the scan I was left with the normal
desktop that I thought was encouraging - then I did another Add/Remove and
got exactly the same error message :(

Any other ideas will be appreciated.

XP Home or XP Pro? I don't want to flood the newsgroup with this information
(this is HARDLY a basic question by the way *grins*) but if you want I'll
take a look.

Showing Hidden Files:
http://kgiii.info/windows/all/general/show_hidden_files.html

Then in C:\Windows\Inf find "fp40ext.inf" and open it with notepad...

At that point you have a choice...

You can click the second link in my signature and follow it to the forum and
post it there and I can take a look at it. Alternatively you can post it
here and bloat the newsgroups up. The choice is your's to make and I'd not
want to make you think you're obligated to move it elsewhere but I have
plenty of space and bandwidth so it's not an issue if you wanted to have it
there. Yet posting large files into the newsgroup is often frowned on. Odd,
more and more people seem to do it though. I wonder if it's a bandwidth
thing and people don't think about it now that they have so much of it?

Finally, one last thing... Check the permissions on that file for me please?
Disable simple file sharing and have a gander at 'em if you don't mind.

BTW, the destination folder would be "c:\windows\inf"

Galen,
I assume your method will work to check & replace any corrupted system
files. I sure wish the information you provided would be more readily
accessible. I'd thought there ought to be a way to replace corrupted system
files without doing a complete new OS install but hadn't seen any mention of
this anywhere. Can the same command be used to correct corrupted system
files in Win98SE do you suppose? I've got an old computer that acts
erratically (sometimes locks up) when I try to get "system information"; it
was fine until fairly recently but now is messed up. I really hate to do a
complete OS install and then re-install all my programs. If you're not
familiar with Win98SE in this regard, do you know where and how to get an
answer. Thanks. PS Are you a Microsoft rep or just a helpful user? It's
not clear to me whether some of the answers I see in these boards are from
Microsoft people. IE, what's the "MS-MVP" next to your name?

First yes... SFC (system file check) utility is, IIRC, in 98. MS MVP is
meaning that I've been awarded, current and past in my case, the Microsoft
Most Valuable Professional award. It doesn't mean that I know more than
anyone else or that I have the same opinions as Microsoft. What it means is
that I know more than most (or so they tell me but I'm really pretty sure
it's just that I read a lot and that anyone can likely know what I know
easily enough) and am willing to spend time sharing that knowledge with you
or other people. Shell - if you can click it then it's shell. If you can see
it? It's part of the shell. If you can open it, change it, see it, bite it,
chew it, etc? It's part of the shell... Well okay but kinda like that.
Anyhow, IE is internet explorer and is likely the browser you use by
default. Basically the MVP means I can break your IE for you and hopefully
put it back together. It's a secondary ability with the primary being in
Shell/User. The story goes back to 1979 or so and is too long to re-print
here. http://mvp.support.microsoft.com and note that I do NOT have a public
profile.

Galen,

Thanks. I realize out off subject here, on Win98SE. But it's so hard to
come by useful info, I tend to latch on when I can. One more quickie on that
and I'll drop any more questions on 98SE, if you would be so kind. I'd run
IIRC in the same way as SFC ? Or alternatively, run it w/o the " /scannow",
perhaps, and get a menu with instructions?

Actually, I don't use IE much but am considering switching over to it.
Until a few weeks ago, AOL dialup was my ISP; I used their browser. Now I
have SBC Yahoo DSL and use their browser, mostly. IE seems to have some
advantages, though, when I do use it. If I switch, I'll probably be posting
often in that area- at least until I work out the kinks. Seems like the
"help" on most programs or services don't often provide answers that I can
find.

Thanks again for the help you've already provided and, hopefully, for a
quick answer to the above wrt using IIRC.

Make sure to read all of this...

Oh it's okay. We're not in XP General so they probably won't yell too much
as the noise isn't so much here. Additionally the link (bottom-most) in my
signature will take you to my site where there's a forum... Not only that
I'm one of the odd people who use a real reply too address in his email for
this. Yups... I get mounds of spam that makes it through the Gmail filters
even. A well...

Now, I'm going to guess you're using XP so it's time for a short lesson...

Start
Run
Type "cmd" without the quotes
Hit enter
Type "sfc /?" (no quote again)
Hit enter
You'll get this:

C:\Documents and Settings\KGIII>sfc /?

Microsoft(R) Windows XP Windows File Checker Version 5.1
(C) 1999-2000 Microsoft Corp. All rights reserved

Scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with
correct Microsoft versions.

SFC [/SCANNOW] [/SCANONCE] [/SCANBOOT] [/REVERT] [/PURGECACHE]
[/CACHESIZE=x]

/SCANNOW Scans all protected system files immediately.
/SCANONCE Scans all protected system files once at the next boot.
/SCANBOOT Scans all protected system files at every boot.
/REVERT Return scan to default setting.
/PURGECACHE Purges the file cache.
/CACHESIZE=x Sets the file cache size.

C:\Documents and Settings\KGIII>

Well it won't say KGIII of course but the idea's the same.

Now here's the problem... IIRC is "If I Recall Correctly" and not a system
prompt but a acronym akin to LOL or BBL or something. A quick look to the
Microsoft support pages shows SFC information for 98 so it was in 98 as
well. Not "IIRC" which is "If I Recall Correctly" meaning I hadn't checked
and wasn't sure if it was available for 98 and my memory's pretty bad though
I like to lie and say it's overloaded.

Galen,

Thanks again. Boy am I red-faced. My memory is very bad and I've never
been good with acronyms. I suppose you've guessed by now that my screen name
here (digiDave) was chosen with tongue implanted firmly in cheek. Guess I'll
fire up that computer (that's the one with 98SE) & give the "sfc" command a
whirl.
