Add/Remove Program issue - Office2003

Hello,

I'm having issues with Access. When I try to use it, it says it's
installing then the box disapears & nothing more happens. I try to run
install from the CD & same thing, nothing happens. I try to remove office
via add/remove programs, & you guessed it, nothing happens!

I know this involves office but also seems to be a general Windows issue
since it can't even be removed. I pasted the event log entry from trying to
remove it. Is there a registry entry corrupted? Im trying not to have to
reload XP from scratch. There are MANY things installed here! Everything
was working fine until yesterday.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance!!!

If you have used disk cleanup programs, one of them may have deleted the
uninstall file that is created during the install process. If that happens,
Office can be neither reinstalled, repaired or removed.

This happened to me with Office 2000. The only way around the problem was to
go back to a system image I created before I foolishly trusted the cleanup
program to do right by me.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate the guidance.

I do have other identical PC's running the same version of XP-SP2 and
Office2003. Could I copy files from a "sister PC" and use those to replace
the missing or corupted files? If so, Would they be in the $NTUNINSTALL
folders in the Windows folder?

Thanks again!

I am not certain at all that a file transferred from one computer to another
would work. This file is constructed during the install of Office. It
contains all the information as to where things are installed, what
components you chose to install etc.

As different components may installed on different computers, due to
hardware/software already on the computer, the file would likely not be
compatible.

Thanks again for the response!

I have multiple machines where the motherboards/hardware are identical.
Complete installs were performed on each install of Office.

Would it be possible to edit the registry so that the PC doesn't think that
Office was ever installed thus allowing the setup to run properly to install
it again?

Thanks!

It would be a thankless task to modify the registry to remove all traces of
Office.

A few years ago I monitored an install using a little free applet that was
published by PC Magazine.

I looked at the file created after the Office install that showed all the
changes to the hard drive. There were literally many tens of thousands of
entries, both in files added, files deleted, files changed, registry entries
added/changed/deleted. It was mind boggling.

Which ONE would you change to fool the computer into thing that Office was
not installed?? Who knows!
