MsiInstaller Error

G

Guest

When I check for updates in the "Help/About" section, I get the up to date
message, but the signatures do not install. Same thing at Microsoft Update.
It says sucessful, but the update doesn't install. I get this error in Event
Viewer every time...

Product: Windows Defender Signatures - Update
'{9AD8C4EE-808D-430C-BA88-6075B2053507}' could not be installed. Error code
1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with
installing software packages. Use the following link for instructions on
turning on logging support: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23127

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

My other machine updates successfully.

Thanks Bill.
That workaround is what I've been using. It works great, but I have to do it
each time there's an update. I know this is a beta, and I don't mind putting
up with a few bugs, but the update issue should be top priority. Does
Microsoft know what's causing the problem yet? Why some machines have no
problems, but others do?
I have tried many things to get the updates working properly. Here's what I
tried this morning...

First off, my second machine has no problems downloading and applying the
updates. I got to poking around in C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\ and noticed the Windows
Defender Directory size was larger on the working machine. I shut down
MSASCui.exe and MsMpEng.exe on the machine having problems, then deleted the
entire Windows Defender directory in C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\. I copied the Windows Defender directory
from the working machine over to the non-working machine. I rebooted and the
update downloaded and installed without a hitch. This makes me think
something in that directory was corrupted or something. I guess I'll know if
it's going to "stick" when the next update comes down the pike.
Another thing...
I use a registry cleaner and suspect it was deleting entries that may be
needed by Windows Defender. After a scan with RegSeeker, I found these
entries it wanted to remove...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\1F58A70DBADD45F4F864B41C7A89C85C]

Interesting. Yours is not the first message I've seen which wonders about
registry cleaners and Windows Defender issues. However, I can say that I've
seen problems updating on machines that have never seen a registry
cleaner--not repeated problems, however.

I can't say that the log enlightens me.

I think I'd advice a repair of Windows Defender--because of your
registry-cleaner experience:

start, control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender, click on
"click here for support information" then click on repair.

What I don't understand is that you say that the KB 915105 process is
helping you--so whatever is wrong doesn't seem to be a permanent block to
updating.

Did you try going to Windows Update, doing an Express Scan, and applying all
offered updates?

G

Guest

Thanks. I've tried all of the things you mentioned. The KB 915105 process
does indeed work, but I have to use it each time there's an update. I would
like it to happen automatically. Oh well, I'm sure these bugs will get
squashed, eventually.
