ActiveX/COM errors?

T

Terry Pinnell

My weekly run of Norton WinDoctor is reporting:
"The ActiveX/COM sections of your Windows Registry contain one or more
invalid entries"

The details given of each one are like this:

Missing or Invalid Key: "HNetCfg.FwAuthorizedApplication"
ProgID, "HNetCfg.FwAuthorizedApplication," refers to an invalid
ActiveX/COM entry, "{EC9846B3-2762-4A6B-A214-6ACB603462D2}."

It does not repair them automatically. What are they and how should I
fix please?

{EC9846B3-2762-4A6B-A214-6ACB603462D2} is a valid ActiveX/COM entry, and
it's safe to ignore the warnings issued by the utility. If the
{EC9846B3-2762-4A6B-A214-6ACB603462D2} registration is missing in your
system, type this command in Start/Run:

regsvr32 hnetcfg.dll

Thanks Ramesh. Can you say a little more about this please? What is
hnetcfg.dll? I searched the registry for
EC9846B3-2762-4A6B-A214-6ACB603462D2 with no hits, but I'd like to
understand rather more about the significance of that before I
reinstate it please.

Hnetcfg.dll is the "Home Networking Configuration Manager" module. This
system file contains the APIs for Windows Firewall/ICS. As per the message
(from Norton WinDoctor), it looks as if the hnetcfg.dll registration is
missing in the Windows registry. If you don't have any problems in
configuring Windows Firewall or Internet Connection Sharing, then simple
ignore the error message. However, registering the module does not cause any
harm either.
