Active Window

Is there any way of customzing the active windows setting?
When running multiple programs I find it highly annoying that the active
window can be changed automatically. For instance when running program A, you
switch to program B and give it something to do (e.g. to search for an item).
Whilst program B is running you swith back to A, thereby making it the active
window. Now when B is finished it will automatically become the active
window, interrupting you and demanding your attention. I'd like this to stop.
Is there a setting in which this won't happen?
