Activation popup shows after reinstall

Help, had to reinstall XP pro after sytem went on strike. Had installed SP2
then a few weeks later tried to install new MB and CPU. System would not
boot, went into continual restart mode. Finally just did complete reinstall
of XP from cd with quick format of C: drive. Now get popup screen showing
must activate, but when click on box, next screen show has already been
activated. Computer properties shows OS is registered to me, but the daily
popup still shows must activate. How do I 1) reactivate if shows already
activated or 2) stop popup screen? Already tried looking under system tools
for activation link, it's not there.

Tried that, it didn't work. found the same info in the reply to another user
that came up about the time I made my post. The second half of that answer
included editing the registry. Not afraid to do that, but will try it last.
Thanks anyway

Okay.
Try this:-
Start the computer in Safe.
Start>Run>Regedit>Ok.
Delete the following keys:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers

Exit the registry editor and reboot the system.

back again. the only place I can locate the keys you mentioned is:
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\cryptograhy\providers.
before I start deleting.. will deleting this one work or will I kill
everything?
(yes, I've exported 2 copies of the registry to the desktop) and will I need
to run the two regsvr files again?

My problem is identical to yours ; posted under "XP PRO activation
aggrevation"; please post if you find a fix for yours so I can fix mine & I
will do the same if I find a solution. THANX

DO NOT DELETE THE REGISTRY KEY:
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\cryptography\providers
if you do, you create a lot of headaches for yourself. and merging the
copies of the registry you exported doesn't always work100%. luckily there's
such a thing at system restore points. (learned the hard way)

Thanx for the warning. I found this & it makes sense to me that it could work
for this problem but havn't yet tried it. I'm considering waiting 25 more
days just to see what will happen when the pop up gets to zero. Then I'll
have an answer as to what will happen.........maybe then it will give me a
chance to activate it. Have you seen or tried the following yet?
................................................................................................................

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
Version\WPAEvents

In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.

Change at least one digit of first line value to deactivate Windows.

Run %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

Preinstalled xp system use the key on the back of the machine.

All others use the same key, that you used to install windows xp

Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate
Windows, and then click Next. Click Change Product key. Type the product
key in the New key boxes, and then click Update. If another Screen pops
up-Click Remind me latter. Reboot. Then activate. Reboot.
