Accessing a printer on a second network

Alex

I have upgraded a network pc from win98 to xp pro
(Remaining all win98) and added a second network card,
this pc can now see printers on both networks but I would
like to provide access to the printers from one network
to printers on the second network. The printers are
shared and I can ping the ip of the upgraded pc with two
network cards but when I try to add a printer to any pc I
get error on port selection. Also the newtork pc's can't
see the printer connected to the upgraded pc local LPT
port!!

First, make sure that the Printer Share Name on the XP computer is not more
than 12 characters long and does not contain embedded spaces or other
special characters.

If that doesn't help, can the other computers "see" and access file shares
on the Windows XP computer (make sure that the share names are not more than
12 characters long etc.)?

If that still doesn't help, a bit more info about the network topology might
help - for example, why the two NICs in the XP computer?

The printer drivers for Windows 98 are not any use on the XP computer and
vice versa. You may need to add the Windows 98 drivers to the XP computer
as "Additional Drivers" - see the descriptive information on the pages at
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/AddDrivertoOldOS.htm and
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterNoPP.htm for some info about this.

After you get the networking and printer driver issues sorted out, be aware
that Windows XP has user based security, so you will need to logon at the
Windows 98 computers with a user account that is known on the XP computer
(or enable the Guest account on the XP computer) to avoid prompts for the
password for the IPC$ share on the Windows 98 computers.
