access violation error

When I close out Explorer, most times I get this message" access violation
of address 0C00F8C7" etc. etc & what happens is, some of my taskbar icons
disappear & I have to re-boot to get them back. Since I am getting ready to
"Ghost" my C drive to a larger one, I wonder if I should think about that? I
just did a fresh install of XP Pro a couple weeks ago when I added more RAM
plus. Thanks for any help

You are absolutely right not going ahead with the Cloning/imaging procedure
as the trouble from the old/smaller HDD will be copied to the new HDD/bigger
one and the new one will inherit the problems and the scenario carries on.
Best if you troubleshoot all problems before preforming the Cloning step.

As the name refer to, it is a
memory problem, some applications/programs
didn't release the memory in timely fashion causing the Error to be thrown by
the system error reporting tools.
Also it could be the work of malwares, badly written application installed
on your system including third party toolbars installed beside Internet
explorer, do you have other toolbars installed try to uninstall them, memory
gone bad or loose in their slots/dust also can cause this.

=Go through these cleaning steps:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.
How to manage Add-Ons:

Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and uncheck
this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) and click Apply
then OK to close your IE Properties.

.... You may have a bad RAM try to test your RAM by running Memtest by
downloading this tool and unzip it and make a floppy or CD/DVD and run it on
Reboot.

You may need to reposition/reset the RAM sticks in their slots.

Turn Off DEP:

Look in the Event Viewer for Any Error Messages that can shed
some
light on the causer and post it back in your next Post.
On how to access the Event Viewer do the following:
- Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr click [OK]
There you will see three Options/Folders:
Application
System
Security
By clicking on each and look in the Right Pane/Window you will see a report
Log Double click on the error Message (X) to get more info and you can copy
and paste in your next post.

And on your Device Manger for any malfunctioning Devices, by right click My
Computer and select properties then click on Hardware Tab >> Click on Device
Manager Button >> Click on the [+] beside each device to Expand its tree and
see if there is Yellow Mark or Red (X).

HTH.
Let us know.

Thanks for all the info.
I have Ad Aware, Windows Defender & AVG running.
I empty my Temp folders & cookies every night plus run a program called
clean up, every night
I defrag & check disk on a regular basis, once a week.
Brand new tower, motherboard & RAM so there is no dust.
One yellow mark under device manager & that is a USB port

I am going from a 40G hard drive to 160G & the reason I wanted to "Ghost" is
I didn't want to lose all my wireless settings or my shared folders. Since I
run 3 machines including a laptop, I need them to be operational. I didn't
set these up so I don't know how to put them back should I lose them :)

I have used the Google tool bar it seems forever but will unable that & see.
As for the other stuff, while I feel qualified to clean my machine, I don't
feel qualified to do other things that I know nothing about. Will wait & see
what my "guru" suggest & show him the yellow mark under device manager

Thanks for all this information. I have it printed out to show the guru. I
do appreciate it.
