Access Violation. XP Sp2

I am constantly getting Access Violations indicated when I close down a
program, they are all of the type 'Access Violation at # write of
address #'. How can I trace the problem or more to the point, put
whatever is wrong, right again? I have no idea how to start and any
suggestions would be appreciated.

It seems that the problem is not associated with a particular program,
it only occurs when I am returning to the desktop. I am trying to make
up a log but as yet there has only been the one instance since I wrote
the message! In hindsight I suppose I should have got a log going before
I asked for help but I thought the procedure would have been the same
for all errors of this type. Thanks for your interest...
