Access 2003 won't open Access 2002 database

Hi. I have been using Access 2003 for several months and all of a sudden it
now refuses to open one of the databases created using Office 2002 (XP).
Prior to now I got the annoying security alerts about blocking unsafe
expressions (even though Jet service pack 8 has been installed. What really
confuses me is that it I created both databases in Access XP and now I can
only open one. I changed computers and office systems several months ago,
but everything was fine until last Thursday. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Robyn.
all of a sudden it
now refuses to open one of the databases created using Office 2002 (XP).

What error message are you receiving when you attempt to open this database?

Hi Gunny

Either I get a message that the document caused a serious error last time it
was opened. Would I like to continue to open it. Or I get no message at
all. I have "re" enabled the database but it doesn't help. It just hangs.

Any suggestions? I would really appreciate them - this is driving me nuts!

Hi, Robyn.

First, make a backup copy of the database so that you'll have multiple
chances of fixing the problem and a recovery service will have the best
chance of recovering it, if need be. Next, if you have another computer
available with Access 2002 or 2003 installed, try to open the database with
on the other computer. (If the database is in Access 2000 database format,
then Access 2000 could also be used to attempt to open the database.) Do
you get the same problem, or does it open just fine? If it has the same
problem, I would suspect corruption. If it opens just fine, there may be a
problem with the Access 2003 installation on this computer.

If you don't have access to another computer with Access, then try using the
JetComp utility to compact and repair the database file. You may find a
link to this tool and other free diagnostic tools in the "Free Microsoft
Access Troubleshooting Tools" section on this Web page:

If it doesn't help, then you'll need to resort to your latest backup. You
do have a backup, don't you? If you don't, then you'll need to resort to a
recovery service.

Hi again

Thanks for the suggestions. The database opens just fine on all the other
computers which are still using Office XP. The other databases we use all
open fine on my computer with Office 2003. That is why this is puzzling me
so much. And yes, we have backups - the office didn't do that until I
started working here, but we routinely back up now - and test the back ups
too.

Any more suggestions?

Thanks again.

Robyn
