How can I use my MIDI keyboard with the A7N8X E Deluxe motherboard?

I have hooked up the 15 pin plug to the motherboard. Device manager
shows the gameport. The soundstorm utility that comes with the board
doesn't really help much. It looks like it will let me play sounds or
pick sound fonts, but doesn't let me try to play an attached keyboars.

In the past I used a Creative Labs audio card and it came with a
little keyboard program. It allowed you to select soundfonts and as
you pressed on the MIDI keyboard keys, the sound wold come out the
speaker.

I have Cakewalk Sonar installed and it should allow me to use the MIDI
keyboard. I haven't figured out how to do it yet because Cakewalk in
itself is a pretyy confusing program for a beginner like me.

I would like to be sure that the keyboard works with my motherboard
sound system. Using just the software that comes with the Asus board
and Windows XP, can you play a MIDI keyboard?

Thank you for your time and help;
Frank

The MIDI IN has a delay, so you probably won't want to use it for
recording anyway.

Good Luck,

You need to buy a gameport to MIDI adaptor. Noted MIDI connections are 5
pins.

Any good size music stores that sells MIDI gears should have it, ask. After
plugging it into the gameport, you need to figure out which one is MIDI IN
on the cable. Plug this into the MIDI OUT on your keyboard. That's the
only connection you need as you mentioned soundfonts and that means you're
planning on using the onboard chip as output.

Start Sonar, it should ask you to pick a midi device, if it doesn't, goto
options/midi devices. Select MIDI Port on the left for input, on the right
select the soundfont device that you're loading the soundfonts to. For mine
is: SBLive! Synth A [DF80] and SBLive! Synth B [DF80]. Next click move
selected devices to top button. Click ok.

I am assuming you know what you're doing in Sonar. If not, read the manual
in setting up the channels and tracks.

I am having no problem with my Roland A-33 hooked up to the SBLive!
gameport. I don't notice delays however.

Thank you for taking the time out to help me. I eventually did get it
it working. Learning Sonar is a whole new ballgame though.

Thanks again;
