A lot will depend on your budget and whether you can/wish to use high FSB
settings - and overclocking.

I have a rev. 1 board which maxes out around 185 FSB, even with PC3200 RAM.
If you have a rev 2 board, then the max is unlikely to exceed 215 FSB,
depending on cpu etc. Also, people have had better results with the 1004
(which is what I use) version of the BIOS compared to the later ones - again
for rev 1 boards.

As this chipset prefers to run in sync (i.e. the cpu and RAM at the same
FSB), performance should increase with increase in FSB (and reducing the
multiplier, if you don't wish to overclock).

I am contemplating a 512Mb stick of Crucial PC3200 RAM to see if I can
achieve a higher FSB.

So post more info about your current system and how you intend to use it.

Thanks.

Current system - you don't want to know.

Proposed upgrade:-

Asus A7N8X-Delux
Athlon XP 2800 Barton
2x512mb Crucial 3200
Radion 9600XT 128mb
W Digital Caviar 120 8mb cache 7200

Yes, I'd be glad of any comments.
I'm not intending to overclock or do strange things with the bios etc that I
don't really understand...just want a good, fast, stable machine.
As I say, I was happy with the above Board and Memory until I picked up some
whispers about possible conflicts...asked around...and now no less confused.
I asked Asus for example and received short note from USA to say:

BIOS..disabled APIC and away it went...everything was connected..OC'd
too..and it flew...but once again my IRQ's are all jambed up like
Win98..that was one of the things I was hoping to fix

and from their Chinees Office, for DDR 400 advised:-
Winbond
Twinmos
Corsair

Unfortunately, this Asus mobo seems to be picky over the RAM. Have you
thought about the Abit NF7-S, which also has Soundstorm (which was one of
the main reasons why I went for the de luxe version), SATA etc?

Also, a SATA drive will free up an IDE channel, if this is useful to you. I
run 2 x Maxtor SATAs and 1 x Samsung PATA drive.

sorry if you already tried my suggestion: did you enabled the SATA
controller with the jumper on the mobo..
for your information, I am running with 2x 512 noname PC3200-DDRSDRAM @fsb
220 with and athlon XP2000+..without any problem...

actually what it is..is a known issue with WinXP...I have an XP Pro non
SP1..I need to purchase a newer SP1 version to correct this issue..go
figure..certain boards..and not all have an APIC conflict..I just happen to
have an A7N that has that issue..more money to spend yet again
