98SE/XP Powerdown Problem

A

ALEX

I have upgraded from 98SE to XP Pro. For some reason I do
not have the ability to put my computer into standy mode.
I am only able to shutdown or restart. My computer also
will not powerdown. When I tell the computer to shutdown
it goes through the motions and turns off but the actual
computer never will powerdown. The computer just stays on
as if I was still running the OS. the only way I can
powerdown is to use the switch in the back of the
computer. The power button in the front will not turn the
computer off even if I hold it down for a few secs. Does
anyone know what to do? Lastly, I have already formatted
my hard drive and reinstalled everything to no avail.
Thanks in advance for the help.

You should update your BIOS when upgrading your operating system. A newer
BIOS will support the current ACPI power specification. You also need to
update your video driver when upgrading to XP. The combination of a new BIOS
and a new video driver will allow your computer to get into standby.

Go to Control Panel > Power Options and change how the power button responds
when pressed.
