powerdown fails after sp2

I recently replaced the motherboard for this computer and reinstalled xp from
the facotory disk. I started having powerdown issues, so I did another boot
to factory to locate which program was causing the problem. Everything worked
fine until I added sp2. Since that install, the computer gets to the shutting
down screen and from there, has to be manually turned off. What do I need to
check to clear up this problem?

I didn't have a problem with any of the programs before I replaced the main
board. I did have a problem keeping the date and time set when I disconnected
the power cord. I replaced the main battery but kept having problems. I then
replaced the cmos and it worked for awhile. then came the shutting down at
random, wouldn't power up for days. I turned it upside down and it started to
power up. Since the main board has been replaced, it still occasionally shuts
down but the thing that has me stumped is having to manually turn it off
which never happened before and I didn't have any problems with sp2
previously.

I believe you (jf9908) have just changed everything you wrote about in one
response. You originally and in your first response only mentioned SP2.
Suddenly, you mention SP3. Was that a typo?

Also - given your first response - some of what you mentioned would not have
been caused or reflected in a software update (you turned the physical
machine upside down and it began to boot...?!) Sounds like several
possibilities to me (bad power supply, bad RAM, bad hard disk drive...) but
it could be just about anything really (although highly unlikely to be a
software issue.)

First - backup your important files (image the entire drive if you like.)
Next - run a memory diagnostics test. After that, download and utilize the
hard disk drive manufacturer's diagnostics utilities to test the hard disk
drive. That will verify whether or not those items are functioning within
given parameters.

When you 'replaced the motherboard' - was the replacement from the original
manufacturer of the computer?

Thanks for the help. I have already replaced all datta, I think, on the hard
drive when I used the disks to reboot the system. The manufacturer does not
have parts so I purchased one from e-bay. The old board did have some bad
parts which I saw after I open it up.
How do I run these diagnostic test that you recommend? Hard drive and Memory?

the disk that I have to install sp2. Between these two references, I took
the laptop to a tech to see if he could tell me what was wrong and he said I
needed a new main board. Does not the disk that came with the computer to set
it back to factory setting wipe out everything on the hard drive? I have had
to reboot adding the sp2 disk on other pcs and never had a problem until this
time.

Definitely sounds like a hardware issue (e.g., incompatible motherboard;

Given what you have:

There's no telling (unless you bought the same board) if you have the proper
drivers available on that 'disk that came with the computer'... Did you
update the hardware drivers from each hardware manufacturer?


Hard disk drive diagnostics would depend on the manufacturer of the
particular hard disk drive you have (Belarc Advisor might be able to tell
you: http://www.belarc.com/ .)

Hardware can and does go bad. Also - if the motherboard you got was from
eBay (even if it was the same motherboard as was previously in there by
make/model) - it was bought *from eBay*... ;-) )

I totally understand what you are saying about e-bay mdse. However this was
the only option for this particular brand of "Wal-Mart special" I don't
understand how a hardware problem can stop the computer from completing the
shut down process, especially since it shut down properly until I updated
with the xp sp2 disk. I have checked the drivers and everything comes back
OK. The only thing left is just turn it off manually.

FYI: I just finished a system restore, removed the sp2 service pack and
now the powerdown issue is resolved. It totally shuts down by itself. I
appr3ciate everyone that took the time to reply to my posts. Now I'm really
not sure what to do next or maybe not anything.
Just leave it as it is. Strange to me that I had previously installed the
service pack on this computer with no problems. Makes me think that all files
are not wiped off the hard drive with a clean boot. Something sure caused a
conflict.

Getting back to basics. XP will not shut down if there is a program running
(or a program failing to shut down).
With SP2 installed you can uncheck a few programs at a time in msconfig
startup in an effort to find the offending
program. Then you can decide to delete it or reinstall the problematic
program. I'll wager that one of your anti virus programs is the problem.

connecting wireless through a network so no IPS programs. Nothing except what
was on the recovery disk which wiped out everything previously installed on
