90 sec network timeout on startup (boot)

P

pudge

An odd little, and somewhat annoying, quirk started
happening just recently on my XP SP1 system. A system
that has been running fine for quite some time. I re-
installed the ISP's client which created an XP PPoE
Network connection. Performed a couple of boots while
jiggling various network cables and rebooting the DSL
modem.

WinXP boots just like it did before except now when it
comes to creating the network connection the entire
system just hangs for around 90 seconds. My login
completes, my desktop appears, other start-up programs
install in the tray - and then the system just hangs for
awhile waiting on the network connection. Once the
network connection is made, the system continues loading
a few remaining start-up programs and runs as well as it
did before.

What can I do to get back to my old instant network
startup? I have already deleted the XP PPoE network
connection but that did not help.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Since you have a PPPoE connection, the most likely problem is that the
Ethernet connection for your DSL modem is configured to obtain an IP
address automatically. It will wait about 90 seconds for a DHCP
server to assign an address before timing out. Try assigning a static
IP address, like 10.0.0.1, to the Ethernet connection. Don't change
any settings of the PPPoE (broadband) connection.

Steve,

Thanks for the info. Perhaps I mis-stated my current
situation -

I have deleted the PPoE connection in Windows XP Pro. I
have hooked the PC network card to my router and the
router to the DSL modem. I am back to using the "Local
Area Connection" as before I messed with the ISP's
software that created the Win XP PPoE connection.

The system hang waiting for the local area connection is
now getting longer - up to 20-25 minutes. I thought it
might be a virus or spyware so I scanned (Norton AV &
Spybot) and found nothing. I performed a "system
restore" to a point before I ever installed the PPoE
connection.

During the hang, I can open a cmd window and ping various
webistes on the internet. An "ipconfig /all" returns:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

Does anyone have an idea why the "local area connection"
is hanging? The hang time is getting longer and I'm not
sure why.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Steve

What do you mean by "system hang waiting for the local area
connection", Steve? What isn't working during that time? You say
that you can ping web sites during that time, so I'd say that the
local area connection is working.

I don't think this is related to the problem, but your router's IP
configuration is incorrect. It's using 192.171.222.x, which is a
range of public IP addresses. Using a public IP range on your LAN can
prevent you from accessing some web sites. Change it to 192.168.x.x,
which is reserved for private networks.

Hi,

For many users this change was caused by update KB828028:
