router / internet / network question

I use a Linksys Router 4 with a 4-port switch for my home network. I have a
DSL modem connected to the router.

Got new computer (Win XP home) and the network places shows an icon for a
Local Area Connection /LAN and an icon for an Internet Connection.

Question: the old computer, same op system didn't have both icons, just the
Local Area Connection /LAN. Do I need both connections? Does this allow me
to regulate the network LAN separately from the Internet connection? The
route does the work for the PPOE stuff.

Hi, Bob. The new computer might have more than one network device; i.e.,
a built-in modem and a built-in nic. Only the nic connection relates to
the dsl connection, of course.
