Huh! - I can disconnect adsl router from Windows XP!!!

M

Mike

I have a dlink504 adsl router. I have 3 lan pcs all have static ip
addresses.

Router dhcp etc is disabled. My router has a password weblogin at:
192.168.0.1.

The wierd thing is on Win XP if i goto:

Start>Setting>Network Connections.

It shows me to 2 connections:

1) Internet Connection
2) Local Area Connection.

As i am connecting to the router through the Lan, Lan should be the only one
visible.
By clicking on the Internet Connection i can connect and disconnect the
router from the internet!!!!!.
Why is it showing an Internet Connection in windows and giving this control
over the router?!!!
It should be showing Lan connection only!.

Any ideas?

Dave thank you for that. That would appear to be the reason.

The problem i have is that for some reason IE6 is looking for access via
the Lan instead of this 'internet connection'

In IE i'm using Automatically detect settings".
Any idea how to get IE to find the internet ocnnection?. Outlook, FTP etc
all work but IE won't, just comes up page cannot be displayed on every site.

Any thoughts appreciated

LAN is correct. From a command prompt;
ipconfig /all
may reveal something.

Why did you disable DHCP for workstations? This is more than likely a DNS
issue.

"Automatcilly detect settings" option is usually used if you have a locally
configured proxy server. Most ADSL router are not considered to be proxy
servers. If you do not want to use DHCP services, you will need to specify
all the DNS server/gateway info in the TCP/IP configuration of the network
adapters.

DHCP service eliminates this by fill out this info automatcially.

I disabled the internet gateway device detection in windows an this appeared
to solve my problem.

for info - I disable dhcp because i need each pc to have its own ip address
so i can find a specific it on the network. My understanding
is that all dhcp does is assign ip's automatically.

It also passes the correct DNS server IP addresses to each client.
