24 hours since SP2, no problems.

Since I'm not going back (to sp1), I imagine it's ok to delete the
470 mb directory $NtServicePackUninstall$, from my Windows directory.
Unless there's a better way to eliminate it. (?)

Hi

Yes, you need to delete the folder yourself.

If you make a backup of the folder to e.g. a CD, you can put it
back if you need to uninstall SP2. After restoring the backup,
run %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
to start the process.

If you see other %Windir%\$NTUninstall* folders there as well which
dates back to your SP1 installation, you can delete those as well.
They are not removed by the SP2 installation in case you want to go
back to SP1.

But, is 24 hours enough time to have checked out your entire system?

Hi,

Yes it's safe to delete. There is no other simpler way other than
click/delete.

I am considering backing up and deleting this. in my search for it, I
uncovered another behemoth: a folder called "service pack files" (also in
C:\windows) that is 477 MB........created 12/13/2003. can I do the same
with this? presumably it is SP1-related?

Steve,

I have the Service Pack Files folder in C:\Windows . In it is folder "i386"
which has 2462 objects and a folder "lang" which has 64 objects.
Properties of the Service Pack Files folder indicate it is 530 MB - created
10/18/2002
I wonder if it is safe to delete this folder - anybody know???

TIA
Bill

Me neither - I did a Google search and the majority of the stuff I found
said to leave it alone - maybe somebody here knows for sure
Bill

mine is not quite the same, but close. I'm not gonna take a chance at this
point.

Hi, you'll need this folder if you want to perform a sfc of your system.
Best leave it alone.....

That is right. And once done, go to Add/Remove Programs and try the
Remove SP2 - it will fail and offer to remove the entry.

Also make sure you have a new fresh System Restore point, made after
the install, then go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup
and in the More Options click the bottom button to delete all but this
latest restore point. That will get rid of the one made in SP2 setup
which is likely to be taking 600MB or so
