How to remove wxpSP2 backup files? & fresh install Q

How can you properly remove the 1 GB of extra files resulting from the SP2
installation creating its backup files - if you don't want to ever go back to
SP1 - but would rather recover the 1GB of space instead?

For instance used to be in A/R for Internet Explorer, gave you an option to
remove backup files to save space - is there something we can do to
accomplish the same thing for the wxpSP2 backup files stash?

350 MB of files were created in WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
500 MB of files were created in WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\I386

Also another question comes to mind here please:
In W9x on a fresh install it was always recommended to copy the cd's win98
folder to a windows\options\cabs folder and run the setup from there for it's
benefits - my question is if there's any such thing we can do with WXP too?

I've always used the XP CD to install from and haven't transferred the i386
folder from the CD to the hard disk/partition.

Hi

Most of the time the OS will find needed files in the
ServicePackFiles\I386 folder (that you should not delete),
but sometimes it will need the files from the OS installation
source.

If you want this source to be available for the OS on the local
hard disk, copy the I386 folder on your OS CD to C:\ (so you get
a folder named C:\I386), and then you need to do the following
changes in registry using e.g. regedit.exe:


Under the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

*add* a new line (keep the existing ones) in the value
"Installation Sources" and write C:\ there.

In the value "SourcePath", replace whatever is there with C:\


Under the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

In the value "SourcePath", replace whatever is there with C:\I386
