2 Issues with Winmail

R

Ronnie Vernon MVP

1. When clicking on the "Sign in to Microsoft Communities to enable the
community features, I am getting an error dialog. "An error occured while
attempting to display the Windows Live ID sign-in dialog? This is a random
error.

2. The View/Current View/Show replies to my messages option, in newsgroups,
is not consistent. It should display only messages I have posted. It only
works for the current newsgroup that is being viewed when it is enabled,
although it remains checked when switching newsgroups. To see this view for
another group, you must open that group and then deselect/reselect the
option?

Anyone else seeing this?

Hi, Ronnie.

For your item 1, have you tried signing in to Passport before starting WM?
It seems to be a persistent setting: once signed in, you stay in.
Until...what?...I don't know. Until you sign out, I guess.

I definitely agree with your item 2! It is a MAJOR hassle to me. I have
the extra 2 buttons on my MS Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 set to <Ctrl>+U and
<Ctrl>+J so that I can quickly step through unread messages and folders.
I've been doing this for years with earlier mice and with OE. Just hit
<Ctrl>+H before the first NG and mouse-click through the 20-30 NGs that I
subscribe to.

That still works in WM for OTHER news servers, but NOT for Microsoft
Communities. :>( Here, as you said, the Show Replies to My Messages is not
persistent when we go to the next NG. Well, it kind of persists. But after
showing all my threads in the next NG, it keeps on "Downloading Metadata"
and other things, then it shows me a lot of (maybe all) the threads that I
have not replied to. So I've programmed the scroll button to be <Ctrl>+H.
That works, but it still is a big hassle, because (a) I have to click it
twice to first uncheck Show Replies..., then to check it again. Combine
this with WM's failure to focus on a message - or anywhere else! - when
arriving at a new NG, and clicking through Communities takes many more
clicks than before.

I bugged this during the beta, but it was ignored, like several other WM
bugs. :>(

With #1, I click the Okay button followed by clicking the X to close the
signin box. Then I'm signed in. If you leave WinMail open, then it says
you are still signed in, but in fact you time out after a bit (don't know
how long), so if I leave WinMail open several hours I sign out and sign back
in. I always get that error also.

#2 I haven't tried that scenario. Within a folder it seems to work okay for
me.

Thanks for that tip, signing in before starting WM works. :)

Like Richard said, I guess I'll just wear out that CTRL+H keys for the other
problem.

Thanks, Steve.

The frustrating thing about #2 is that it is sporadic? Sometimes it works OK
and other times it doesn't?

Regardless of how I enable the option, CTRL+H or click the option in the
View menu. On the first newsgroup in an account, it works fine. Click the
second newsgroup, in the same account and it briefly displays properly but
then immediately refreshes to display all unread messages?

I'm not seeing this with #2, but I toggle it on and off with my button in
OEToolV and then switch NGs. I don't switch NGs while that feature is
enabled.

Is there an updated OETool for WinMail?

Steve has one that works, but you'll have to ask him to get access, since
it's a work "in progress."
