0x8E Stop Error for tcpip.sys

T

TomoyoXXII

Whenever I browse webpages, I often receive this stop error:

Stop: 0x8E (0xC5, 0xA946DC19, 0xA8B1389C, 0x00)

tcpip.sys - Address A946DC19 base at A9466000, DateStamp 488db33e

What does this mean?

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3 on a HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop. I have no clue
what I'm
doing wrong since everything else seems normal. It doesn't seem to happen
when I'm only using one window though. Somebody please tell me what's going
on here.

Did you buy the laptop with Vista or Windows XP installed?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Thank you for your quick response. It came with Vista Home Basic
pre-installed.

The only drivers that have any kind of marks on them are Serial and sptd and
they have yellow exclamation marks. However, they've been like that before
my problem started.

When you replaced Vista with Windows XP did you replace all the third party
drivers to ones suited for Windows XP?

The BSOD error should also appear in the System log of Event Viewer. Can you
please post a copy so that I can see how it links time wise to the other
errors.

Event ID: 4 refers to the sptd driver. This driver comes with Daemon Tools /
Alcohol 120% software. What is the status of this software on your computer.
Alternatively it could be malware. What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware
arrangements?

Event ID: 7001 indicates that the Security Accounts Manager service is
failing to start. Select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools,
Services and right click
on Security Accounts Manager Service and select Properties. The StartUp type
should be
Automatic. Is it?

Yes, all of the Vista drivers were replaced with ones compatible with Windows
XP.

I thought so too earlier when I was going through the errors but strangely
enough, it doesn't show up at all. I'll keep an eye on the event viewer and
record the time of the next BSOD and report it to you the next time it
happens if it helps.

I've just uninstalled Alcohol 120% a few minutes ago. I'm not quite sure
about Daemon Tools since I wasn't able to complete it's install so it's
drivers may still be on my system. Now the sptd driver is shown to be
operating normally. I have Avast for my anti-virus needs and Spybot S&D and
Spyware Blaster for my anti-spyware needs. Spybot doesn't turn up anything
and Avast doesn't seem to be able to scan my system but it still alerts me to
any viruses that may turn up.

Securty Accounts Manager Service was disabled for some reason. I've
switched it to Automatic.

Security Accounts Manager Service was disabled for some reason. I've
switched it to Automatic

This could eliminate a number of errors.

Tomorrow can you please the a fresh set of Warnings and Errors from Event
Viewer so that it is more obvious what errors remain.

What actually happens when you try to get Avast to scan?

This could eliminate a number of errors.

Might be since I haven't gotten the BSOD since I've turned it on but I'm
still staying on guard.

I'll come back tomorrow with an update.

Well, Avast does the scan as usual but at the end of the scan, the results
window comes up and every file it's supposed to have scanned has an error
next to it that says something like "This file could not be scanned due
to..." I can't exactly remember what it said. I'll try again tonight.

I had Avast do a scan last night and the errors I'm seeing are "Unable to

Ärchive is password protected." for some reg, ini, bin, ico, htm, css, dll,

among various others. I think they're installation files? One error says
"Unable to

scan: The file is a decompression bomb."

The Machine Debug Manager service was also Disabled. I've set it to Manual.

Yeah, a few weeks back I deleted a file called npkcrypt because it came up
as a

keylogger when I googled it. There are still traces of it on my system like
it's

startup command and it's driver which I uninstalled yesterday.

Here's another set of errors since last night. After the scan, I put the
computer into

hiberate and when I went to start it up, it had trouble detecting the disk
and Intel

Boot Agent kept starting up.

Thank you. I couldn't find info about this for the life of me. I'm not
sure how RAM

works but I'll research more about it.

Were the latest error reports before or after you set the Machine Debug
Manager service to Manual?

You can remove the npkcrypt startup item using Autoruns.

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from Microsoft).

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from
starting,or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you
uncheck youcan recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer
approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig..
Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an
item and select Search Online to get information about the item
selected.

What CD / DVD software, if, any are you using?.

You have not mentioned any error reports relating to drives previously.
Please let me know if they recur after the computer has been restarted.

Before, it appears. I've just restarted and the only error that has come up
is this:

Thank you for AutoRuns. I feel better using that instead.

I'm not using any unless you mean media players. But I might have gotten
that

error because I had tried turn on my computer with a DVD disk in it. I had
it set my

computer set to boot from the CDROM first so that might have been the issue
for

that. It hasn't occured since though.

Select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and right click
on Server and select Properties. The StartUp type should be Automatic. Is
it?

I posted the appropriate MS KB that matches your error for you. This has to do with
hardware and most likely your memory modules. See my other post

I just realized that my 0x8E error hasn't happened since enabling the Server
service so I'll consider that problem solved. I was getting a lot of 0x77
errors but after following the instructions at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/330174/en-us the error hasn't
occurred since.

Thank you very, very much for your time, patience, and expertise Gerry and
Peter Foldes. I appreciate you guys dealing with a newbie like me.
