Hi,

My son gave this Hewlett Packard Pavilion 521n computer to me, back in
March. He got a new one as this one kept rebooting every so often. I've
stopped it from rebooting, and get the following error message. Maybe
someone can help me with this.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
A problem has been detected, and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart
your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Chaeck to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is
identified in the stop message, disable the driver, or check with the
manufaturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vender for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS
memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe
mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer press F8 to
select Advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

Could this be one of the memory sticks going bad?

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 crashes alot.

It says

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and need to close. We are
sorry for the inconvience.

If you were in the middle of something the information you were working
on might be lost.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

Can someone please clue me in as to what the problem might be? I'm
thinking memory. As I have formated the hard drive, and did a recovery
with Hewlett Packard recovery disks. Same problem.

Thank You for any input.

You definitely are having hardware problems. Software solutions
(reinstalling Windows) will not help bad hardware. The trid3d.dll
belongs to the Trident video adapter which is probably on the
motherboard. Test the memory and if the memory tests OK, it is probably
a bad motherboard. If the computer is still under warranty, contact HP
tech support for repair/replacement.

Here are general hardware troubleshooting steps:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Troubleshooting

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

The behavior may occur if the win32k.sys is corrupted. Go to
C:\WINDOWS\System32 and rename the Win32k.sys file to Win32k.old and then
close the window. Now go back to the system32 folder and you will have a
new and non-corrupt Win32k.sys file.

The behavior also may be caused by that the virtual memory of the Windows XP
is corrupted. Disable and then enable the Virtual Memory to see whether it
solved the problem.

To disable Virtual memory:

1. Right click My Computer and choose properties
2. Click the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance click settings.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Under Virtual memory click change
6. Click no paging file
7. Click OK
8. Restart the computer

To enable Virtual memory:

1. Right click My Computer and choose properties
2. Click the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance click settings.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Under Virtual memory click change
6. Click System Managed Size
7. Click OK
8. Restart the computer

See this link for some info on that error message:
http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm
0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

To check memory try it by removing sticks of ram or using known good
ram. You can also test the ram using these programs.

Next time when posting a message put something descriptive about the
problem in the subject line. Many people bypass messages that have a
generic subject lines that only have a request for help.
