I receive an error when trying to run the complete windows backup. The full
error is "The backup application could not start due to an internal error:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424).
Please check your system configuration and try again."
I have used this on different machines and has worked fine. I could not fine
were it needs to be reinstalled from. Is it not part of the OS?. Any help
would be great.

Hi Nick,

I have been working with Vista backup for a while now, and can only
conclude it is total crap.
You hardly have a clue what is backupped (since M$ decided that
descriptions as 'my images' are adequate).
You cannot set the target directory (always on a 'device').
I am not even touching the subject of backing up over network, which is
also totally broken.
In the end it returned only 0x800blabla errors on me, no matter what I
tried (starting a fresh backup, modifying a sheduled backup, etc).

I tried to get help from M$ and in here, but nobody had a clue. I
Googled my fingers blue and found a few 'solutions' that didn't work for me.

So I reinstalled Vista (phoned a few times with M$ for freaking
activationcodes), installed SP1, crashed a few times: In short: The usual.
Now my Vista runs, with SP1, and I will never touch that backupcrap again.

If you need a reliable backup, don't use M$ buildin stoftware, it is
broken beyound repair.

A few good solution are on the market.
Go have a look. :)
I use True Image of Acronis now, which is simple to use, can make
differencial backups, supports total disk backup, etc. It costs (in
Holland) around 80 euro.
I cannot say if they are worth their money because I didn't try any
others on Vista, but I am satisfied with thier software so far.

In my opinion: The time I lost fiddling around with M$ backup was 100
fold compensated if I immediately bought a working solution.
Isn't it always like that in retrospect? ;-)

Good luck

If you consider Acronis True Image be sure to test it during the trial
period. The latest release is very buggy, and not just
with Vista.

What sort of problems has McAfee caused in Windows Vista. I have McAfee
installed and would like to know ahead of time if I begin to have problems.
Is there a page listing McAfee incompatibilities?

Thanks for your reply.
