When I pull up a picture from my pictures I get several
options to play with the picture. When I zoom in for a
closer view of a prticular part of the picture I discover
a lok that I want to save and print. However I can,t
figure out how to save it or print it. I always get the
original print. Any wisdom on the subject

The Zoom in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is
only for Viewing. It is not an editing program.

The process you are looking for is called *cropping*
.....this allows you to frame and cutout any portion of
a digital image so it can be saved and/or printed as
a separate file.

Any digital image editing program should have a
Crop tool. If you do not have a digital image editing
program...Digital Image Pro 9 would be an excellent
choice.

Actually, the FreeWare IrfanView can be used to
Crop an image.

You can download it from the following site:

IrfanView 3.85
http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967.html
(get the plug-ins too)

1) Open an image in IrfanView...

2) Left click/Drag a box around the portion you
wish to crop.

3) Go to...Edit / Crop Selection or type...Ctrl - Y.

4) Go to...File / Save As...
Choose a folder to save in.
Type a name for the new file.
Choose a format (.jpg).
Left click "Save".

You can crop and save this part of the image as a new file and then you can
print it. If you have no photo editing software on your computer you can try
it using Paint.
First thing to do is to make a copy of the file you want to crop.
Right click on the photo file name or thumbnail and click on Copy on the
opening menu. Hold the Ctrl key down and press the letter V. This will add a
new file in your folder, same name as original file with the word Copy in
front.
Right click on the new Copy file. Click on Open with, click on Paint.
The photo will open full screen, place the photo on your screen to see the
area you want.
Look at the tool bar on the left. Click on the Rectangle tool at the top of
the tools.
Place your mouse pointer at the left top corner in the picture where you
want to start the crop and drag the pointer down and across to select the
area you want.
If you don't have the correct area selected, just click outside the
rectangle you just selected and start again until you have the area you
want.
Right click in the area you selected and click on Copy.
The area selected is now copied to your clipboard.
Click on File, click on New, click on Edit, click on Paste.
The cropped area is now displayed on your screen. Click on File, Save as,
give it a name etc. You can now open it and print it anytime.
The cropped image will look fine on your screen but the problem is in
printing. If you selected a very small part of the picture and you print
larger than 6 x 4 the results will be poor. The second problem is the aspect
ratio of the crop and the aspect ratio of the print size. If they are not
the same the crop size will not fit the print size.
So, give a try with Paint and see how you like it.

If you want to go further you should think about some photo editing software
for cropping and printing capable of much better quality crops and prints.
Plenty available.
You can look at Microsoft Digital Image 9 (poor manual) but great "as you go
help" or something like Qimage (you can try a free demo
http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/) with a great manual but a difficult
interface to work with when you get started. You will need to read the
manual to get oriented, not as intuitive as Image 9.
