zone alarm and win2k networking problems

I have posted here before with regards to this problem but I'm still
having trouble.

I now have two win2k machines connected via a crossover cable.

Gateway machine has TCP/IP installed and is 198.162.0.1 sub net
255.255.255.0

second machine is identical except IP is 198.162.0.2 and has DNS as
198.162.0.1 (although I have tried without DNS configured at all)

I also have a ZA pro :(

If I disable ZA I can usually get the two computers talking to each
other but wth intermittent internet sharing.

If I enable ZA it just doesnt work

ZA on the gateway machine is configured as an ICS gateway and I put the
IP in as 198.162.0.1

The other machine has ZA configured as client.

Now this is the wierd bit; the client machine insists I enter the
gateway machines IP in the box next to the unselected gateway option; OK
I'll go along with this so I enter 198.162.0.1 and try yet again. No go.

Now ZA automatically sees the other computer and assigns 198.162.0.0 as
the IP for it. On both computers....

I could weep; what am I doing wrong?

First mistake: this makes things harder to network. Get a separate
router/gateway if you can.

Have you tried pointing it at the actual internet address for your DNS?

Sounds like you need to talk to ZA and/or set up the machines properly in
the firewall settings, add them to trusted network, etc.

Ask ZA: if you have Pro, you bought it, therefore they should give you
assistance. Have you tried their forums and/or knowledge base?

Hello
I haven't used ZA but I guess If you are using ZA as you ICS manager, the ZA
probably acts as DHCP manager, i.e. ZA assigns the IP address of another
machine rather than setting it manually.

Well, IMHO , rather than use ZA as ICS manager you should use other
specialized program like www.winproxy.com or www.wingate.com.

You should make life easy on yourself and get a cheap NAT router that cost
as much as ZA Pro and let it be the gateway and DHCP server on the LAN and
gateway for the WAN and be done with it.

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/explain/about-NAT.asp

You can use ZA on the machine behind the router if you like.

And the router is beter protection too.

Duane :)
