Zipping files in Windows XP

B

Bible John

Does one need any third party software or is this support built into the
OS?

Can you just zip any file in Explorer from within the OS without
launching any third party shareware?

Winzp took over that.

Uninstall Winzip and reboot.

Be aware that XP will not handle absolutely every ZIP file. We have
had people send us ZIP files at work, and XP could not handle them. I
use Winzip happily at home, but at work we don't have a license for
it so I got IZ-Arc from Tucows and it seems to work fine.

How do I reactivate it?

Winzp took over that.

From Start | Run
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll
Click Ok.

The change should take effect immediately but you may need to restart to for
all aspects of the built in zip support to appear.

That did not work. I had to re-install WinZip and reboot. Thanks for the
effort though.

Windows has its own zip facility, which is compatible with, and based on,
the winzip coding. So technically, no, you do not need third party
software.
The caveat: When Windows compresses a file, it does not compress it as
much as say WinZip would at its "normal" compression setting. This is
because the file has to "unzip" quickly if it's called for. Window's
compression is on the safe side so that it creates little to no noticeable
time in the unzip/zip process.

Yes. See the drop down menu when you right click on a file.

I don't agree with that; something else must be amiss. I have WinZip 11 I
think it is, Pro version installed, and I still have the XP zip that has
always been available from the right click Send To; Windows Zipped Folder.
And it works; I just tested it for GPs and all works fine.

The information I previously stated was about using "Properties; Advanced"
to enable compression on a folder or file.
When you use the right-click Send To; Windows Zip Folder, that does
compress a little more, but still not as much as WinZip, although they are
closer.
