As I am a bit slow, could someone please explain to me, how to compress
a file. I am using the P.K. READER which unzips perfectly, but I can't
seem to do the opposite. Is it me, or have I got the wrong utility?
Thanks in advance.

You're a century or two bhind the times, I remember good old pk
unzip....just about.

There are loadsa good utilities, I'm sure some will be mentioned in this
thread.

I use IZArc, home page is http://www.izarc.org/index.html

To make an archive (a zip file), click on File>New Archive and follow
instructions or use the help file.

It provides a rightclick menu that will do usual actions, my most used is

"unzip to /???/" where ???.zip, rar, etc is your file to unpack.

You will be amaaaaazed.

(Other equally highly thought of zip utilities are available)

You refer to the PKZIP Reader? Yes that only opens ZIP files.

To compress you need some compression utility; there are many.

Here is one recommendation:

7-Zip <http://www.7-zip.org/>

Bingo!

Probably because you are the only one who *read* the question.

You should read more carefully :)
mike also answered the question and told the OP how to create an archive
with it.
