zip drive question

Got a question concerning an Iomega zip drive.

I used to use the Iomega zip drive for backup with Win 98, Win ME, and Win
XP computers. I have some floppies with files made on each of the preceding
Windows programs.

I now want to consolidate those floppy files onto the hard drive of my new
computer (Win XP, too).

The question is: if I install the Iomega software into my new computer,
will the zip drive then read the floppy files from my older Windows programs
(i.e., can I use my old files in my new computer)????

Iomega Zip drives cannot read floppy diskettes, regardless of the
OS; they can only read Zip disks. And there's no need to install any
Iomega files on a WinXP workstation, as WinXP has built-in support for
Iomega Zip drives.

Really? That's good news. How do I get it going? Just plug the zip drive
into the Win XP computer? Then what?

I know that Windows XP has native drivers for a USB ZIP Disk Drive, which is
automatically recognized when the USB cable is plugged into a USB port, and
the drivers are automatically installed. But, I don't believe that the same
is true for Parallel Port ZIP Drives. I believe that you have to download
and install the latest version of Iomegaware AND the Slow Transfer Patch at
the Downloads link at:

http://www.iomega.com

If the files on the ZIP Disk were not manually copied to that ZIP disk, but
an Iomega utility like Iomega One Step or the Works were used, those two
Iomega utilities are no longer supported by Iomega with Windows XP, and you
won't be able to extract the files and restore them to a folder on a Windows
XP system. You'd have to Restore them to a folder on a system with a
previous version of Windows, then copy them manually to a ZIP disk, and then
manually copy them from the ZIP drive to folders on a Windows XP drive.

That's basically all there is to it: Install the Zip Drive and
reboot.

Even Win2K correctly identified internal Zip drives as generic
"removable" drives and allowed their use without installing any Iomega
software. As far as I know, the same support was continued in WinXP.

ATAPI/IDE ZIP drives might have native Windows XP support, but I haven't had
any success with Windows XP recognizing Parallel Port ZIP drives unless the
latest version of Iomegaware is downloaded and installed. Also, without the
Slow Transfer Patch, the ZIP Parallel Port drives are agonizingly slow

Very interesting discussion and info. Thanks for piling in there. I'll
swear, if a guy's not real careful, he'll learn something every day! And
it's been a nice learning opportunity for me, and hopefully others.

Hi Bruce

Sorry to jump in on this thread at this point, you state that...
There's no need to install any Iomega files on a WinXP workstation, as WinXP has built-in support for
Iomega Zip drives.

However when i use this option i lose the option to password protect an
individual disk, a very secure feature i understand. Is there a workaround
to this feature that I'm missing?.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Pavel

You could compress the files to a zip file and then password protect the
file or convert the format of the zip disk to NTFS in which case you then
could use the 'secure' flag to protect any file on the disk. The only
problem with using the 'secure' mode is that you would have to also export
the encryption key and install it on PC other than the source in order to be
able to read such file, that is if there is to be more than one PC to use
this file.

Hi Pavel

That does seem a bit involved compared to just right clicking a popup and
adding a password in IomegaWare?

Thanks for your input dude.

P

Pavel

It's no more work than having to install the IomegaWare on each of the PC's
that you will use these disks on. Actually, the only thing you need to
install on the other PC's is the Encryption Key which is very small file.
