ZD8000 Laptop temperatures

Hi Guys,

I have here a HP ZD8000 (ZD8202AP) laptop.

The processor is a Prescott Pentium 4 3.2Ghz LGA775, Processor Number
640. ( Intel Specs here http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL7Z8
)

The computer has 3 fans on the underside, two spin always, the third
one spins occasionally when it seems to go over about 65C.

The heatsink and fans are all clean and free from dust.

It is summer here but the ambient air temp is about 20C.

I am worried that it is running too hot, and perhaps the CPU is
getting throttled to keep temps down?

HP Engineering said that 65C was not too hot to worry about and the
CPU shutdown would occur at about 100C?

The intel spec sheet says the Thermal Specification is 67.7 (about the
same temp that the third fan kicks in at).

So my question is:

1. Is it normal for a Laptop to be running at these temps under normal
load (Internet Browsing)
2. If not, how can I make it run cooler????

The P4 is just a hotter running chip I think. I once swapped a celeron out
of an old laptop for a faster P4 and the cpu temp spiked greatly. It was not
uncommon to see it go to 73 at super max load. Idled hot like yours but
never had any problems. Just the cpu I think.

The P4 was never really a great laptop chip. The real laptops used
either Pentium M or Core Duo chips in that era. A laptop with a P4 in it
was usually considered a "desktop replacement".

I have a ZD8000 with a 540 P4, the same specs as yours, but without
the 64 bit extensions. When idle the CPU temp is 50*C, except when
the 3rd (louder) fan kicks in, then it drops to 45*C. When running
Flight Simulator X, which has to be the most CPU intensive program
going, both HT cores are at a constant 100% utilization, and the CPU
temp stays constant at 61*C with the 3rd fan running continuously.
When I exit FSX the CPU temp drops back to 45*C in about 20 seconds.
I have a Seagate 120 GB 5400 rpm drive which runs at around 30*C
after the laptop has been on for a while.

Do you have it up to date with all the latest HP BIOS and driver service
packs? Some of the BIOS upgrades along the way have addressed
temperature control, and battery management issues. Also, when
running on AC power, removing the battery will lower case temps,
and extend the battery life. Also, raising the back of the case to give
freer airflow to the fans helps. Oh, my BIOS version is F.34.

There were "P4 mobile" chips, although it, as you say, was not "great"
for laptops. Even worse were the cut-rate laptops that used regular
desktop P4's.
