your opinion for Windows Messenger

Sometimes when I log into MSN Messenger, I get a notification that says I'm
signed in another location. I think it is because Windows Messenger is
logged in but that doesn't make sense. I have SP1 installed but
every now and then it will be seen in the taskbar and I see it signed in
with my passport.

Temporarily I have my firewall program to stop Windows Messenger from making a
connection. What do you think? What does it effect if it isn't making a outgoing
connection? I use MSN Messenger 6 the most not Windows Messenger.

Had the same problem. You have Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger, go to
Windows Messenger > Tools > Options and uncheck the automatic startup
box(es).

It's not another location, it's another Messenger at the same location.

Greetings Sam,

There's two main circumstances that can cause this to happen.

The first is you've logged in and saved your password somewhere else, in which case you'll
simply need to change your password here:
https://memberservices.passport.net/ppsecure/MSRV_ChangePW.srf

Secondly, Windows Messenger (the built-in Messenger client in Windows XP) may be
automatically logging you on. To stop it, open Windows Messenger (click Start, then Run,
type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this
Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on
version). As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or
Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the
components list and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows
XP Service Pack 1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't
remove Windows Messenger completely, but it will let it stay out of your way. Do *not* just
remove Windows Messenger (as others will tell you to do), by doing so you will disable a
number of features both in Windows and MSN Messenger, including Remote Assistance, Whiteboard
and Application Sharing.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
