WINDOWS MESSENGER & MSN MESSENGER

S

Sophie

I've downloaded MSN Messenger 6.2. I've made it my IM
service and have disabled Windows Messenger thru Set
Programs Access & defaults. Yet, whenever i log onto MSN
Messenger, I get a message telling me that "I've been
signed out of .Net Passport because I was signed in at
another location". Then, I am asked if I want to sign in
using my name or as another user, and I have to re-enter
my password to be signed on.

In addition, I'm not even aware when Windows Messenger
showed me, as I was contacted by someone I know who said
they saw me online thru Windows Messenger. I don't want
to use it - want to use MSN Messenger.

How do I stop Windows Messenger from loading on - and stop
that message telling me I'm already signed on?

TQ for your help

How did you disable Windows Messenger? If you just unchecked the box
that said "log me in when Windows starts" & the other boxes, it is
still working. It is a very deceitful integrated part of Windows XP.

There are ways to really disable it. It isn't as simple as unchecking
any boxes, either in Windows Messenger or in
add-remove\windows-components.

Greetings Sophie,

You'll just need to disable Windows Messenger. To disable Windows Messenger, open it up
(click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab
and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows
starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or
'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background' (depending on version). This won't remove
Windows Messenger, so features like Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing
will continue to work, but it will let it stay out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Greetings ....D

ok - may be "disabled" was a wrong choice of word, as I'm
definitely not an expert - which is probably why I'm
seeking help on this newsgroup :)

So, how do I stop the problem from happening please? I
have unchecked the boxes as Jonathan suggested. I don't
seem to be seen by others now... but I still get the
message that I'm logged on at another location.

Thanks for your interest and... solution.

Ok. You will lose a couple of applications that MSN Messenger supported. But
I don't think it makes much of a difference. I don't think I ever used those
applications, or at least I don't think I will ever need to use them. I have
no idea what "whiteboard" is...

The following is a quote I picked up here in Usenet - sorry I didn't quote the
name of the poster. Copy/paste the line near the bottom of the quote into
start\run:

------------------------ begin quote:
You can completely remove Windows Messenger (4.7) but if you do, you will be
preventing Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other
applications that utilize Messenger from working (or loading without
problems).
<snip>
However, if you really want to remove it completely, for Windows Messenger
4.7, close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in
the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start
button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled.

------------------ end quote

Worked for me. Now only people see me if I log in when I want with MSN
Messenger.

Of course all of my buddies who use Yahoo Messenger see me online most of the
time because that is my main messenger program., and I now belong to a Yahoo
Messenger chatroom group.

My problem with MSN Messenger (voice problems) extended far back before I
disabled Windows Messenger and on into me now being behind a Netgear router
firewall. A few have suggested it is my firewall, but I don't think so (like
I said - problems before that, on & off). First time installed 10 months ago,
no voice for a couple of weeks... then ok. then not. then one-way, then
nothing.... of course Yahoo Messenger has always worked no firewall or
firewall.
