"You don't have permission to save in this location" message

When trying to save to my Desktop I get a message "You do not have permission
to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission"
Why? I AM the Administrator! I used to be able to. I get the impression it's
probably a "settings" issue, but I cannot resolve it. Anyone have any ideas
please?
