You do not have the necessary permissions

Hi,
A user copied his access database from his laptop to the server because his
laptop had to be sent in for repairs. Now we cannot get into the database on
the server. The message you do not have the necessary permissions to use the
object comes up when you try to open the file on the server.

I tried creating a new access database with me as the owner and then
importing the objects from the inaccessable database but the same message
came up.

Any ideas as to what happened???

I do see several system.mdw files on the server and 2 wrkgadm.exe files
also. I don't know why there are so many or which one it should be using.

You also will need the workgroup file (i.e. the mdw file) used to secure the database. Unfortunately, it may be on the
laptop which is in the shop.

If you can find the workgroup file, you can seutp a shortcut to open your database. Add a desktop shortcut to your
workstation, then set this as the Target value:

"Full path to msaccess.exe" "full path to your database" /wrkgrp "full path to your workgroup file"

There are often several system.mdw files on a machine, and wrkgadm.exe is used to administer workgroup files (i.e.
join/create them).

Scott,
I cannot get this shortcut to work. I entered the full path to MSACCESS.EXE
in quotes then a space then the full path to the database in quotes then a
space a / and then the full path to the workgroup file in quotes. The
shortcut just takes me to the first line access to msaccess.exe folder.

Any further ideas?

Did you include the /wrkgrp switch in your Target?

Here is what I put in my shortcut:
F:\JD\OFFICE\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE\MSACCESS.EXE
F:\JD\RRECEIPES\RECIPE2000.MDB /wrkgrp F:\MICROSOFT
OFFICE\OFFICE\1033\WRKGADM.EXE

I added the /wrkgrp switch after reading your response and now am getting:

The command line you used to start microsoft access contains an option
microsoft access doesn't recognize.

It won't open the program this way. Is my syntax wrong? I have tried with
and without quotes in the path.

Joan,
I changed the short cust as you said, assuming the secure MDW is the access
database that I cannot get into, and now I am receiving a message that says:
Microsoft Access could'nt find file 'F:\JD\RRECEIPES\Recipe2000.mdb" this
file is required for startup.

No it isn't the database, it's the workgroup file (mdw extension) that you
used to secure the database with.

I still cannot get into the access database. I joined both of the workgroups
that I found and tried both of them at the end of my shortcut and the message
still comes up that you do not have the necessary permissions. I did use
quotes around each of the paths but not around /wrkgrp.

As someone pointed out earlier, perhaps the mdw you need is on the laptop in
the shop?

I have more or less the same thing, but the access file was copied from an
old PC that is now gone. I am afraid there is no way to get back to the
mdw-file.

Is there a way to recover the database without this mdw-file ?

Regards,

Benoit.
