Yamaha CD Burner in XP Pro

Here is a strange one. I could swear that I could read my
Yamaha 3200E in Windows XP - that is I could use it as a CD
Reader. It does not read CD's (any format). However, Nero
6 will see the Burner and I can create CD's with it. This
is not a problem in Windows 2000 Pro (I physically used the
same device in Windows 2000), everything works. I have
tried a different disk channel/controller, updating the
controller(s) firmware, updating the drive firmware, to no
avail. I think maybe one of the security patches has
caused the Burner to be unable to actually read/display the
contents of a CD. Has anyone else run into this problem?
I can't seem to find this problem posted anywhere and the
drive concerned is on the compatiblity list.

Thanks for any help,
rad

Interesting ! I had the identical problem with the
identical Yamaha burner.

After contacting Yamaha they advised that the as the unit
ages, the laser becomes mis-aligned and although it will
burn, it will not read. Although my Yamaha was only
about 18 months old, I had no basis to argue with them
and wound up replacing it.

Now I'm really wondering !

Good Luck - I'm curious to see if anyone has a better
explanation.

The thing is I also have 3 of these drives kickin around
and they are all different ages. What I suspect is the
oldest works fine in Win2K! That makes me suspect a
different problem.....

Oh and one other thing - if the drive really did have an
alignment problem, why was I able to install Windows XP
from one of the drives with the problem? To do that, the
drive must work! If just gets more curious. I need to
send this to Yamaha too, but they have dropped support
for these drives (they got out of that biz - hummm, makes
u wonder).

No, I tried everything except cleaning the drive(s). My
next step(s) is/are to 1) clean the drive and try again; 2)
move the drive to a different machine and/or one with Win2K
; 3) replace the drive.

What really confuses me is that the burn software can use
the drive with no problem and that it does show up in the
OS (even correctly), but you still can not display CD
contents with it.

Sameo here. I pulled that Yamaha and installed a Sony CDRW
and "No Help". However, if you reboot it will see the cd
initially, then open that drive and no more communication
until you reboot.HellP
