Yahoo Messenger installs extras even when select no

Michael

Just used the active install for the Yahoo! Messenger v.6.0.0.1643 Final and
selected a custom install with just messenger and none of the other things
such as browser toolbar companion and spyware tool and a host of other
things. The messenger component installed and the installer said it was
downloading more messenger parts and then SpyBot TeaTimer warned it was
trying to install the browser toolbar anyway. I crashed out of the install
at that point to avoid further crap installing and messenger seems fine.
Providing the opt out for the extras and then trying to stealth install them
anyway makes Yahoo a bunch of slimy bastards. Yahoo messenger is gone and so
now is my yahoo mail account. They are just too wrong thinking.

ugh. I know the feeling. For me it was a screensaver. I was asked if
I wanted to install 3rd party software, *said no*, and as soon as I did
my firewall (Zone Alarm) went nuts with requests from about 5-6
different programs trying to connect to the internet. I ran Ad-Aware
and it found a bunch of programs and registry entries. After it removed
them I was unable to connect to the internet. In my opinion, any
software that relies on sneaky methods of installing itself is not worth
having. Thanks for the heads up about Yahoo messenger. I'll continue
to use my old version.

You're jumping to incorrect conclusions.

I just installed it myself, and if you choose not to install the
toolbar, etc, they aren't installed. The only thing that is
installed, along with the chat client, is an Internet Explorer plugin
to show your buddy list in IE's sidebar. That's all...no toolbar, no
address book crap, none of that.

Before eradicating e-mail accounts and applications, it's generally
considered a good thing to have all the facts.

I just installed it too. I deseletcted the things I didn't want and had
no problem.

I don't think what you say is true. TeaTimer described the two 'extra'
installs as 'User-specific browser toolbar' and 'Global browser toolbar'
before I stopped the install and it was trying to download more stuff. Even
if what you say is correct why do I need this sidebar, if I have messenger
running I can see my buddy list in its window and if I don't have messenger
running why would I need my list. The whole active install process is too
opaque and gets people into the habit of just allowing anything to be
installed. It is as I said wrong thinking and I think sinister.

I don't think what you say is true.

This coming from the person who didn't bother to actually let the
install do its thing and then confirm it for himself. Unlike you, I
actually let it install, and can say with all certainty that it
doesn't install the toolbar.
TeaTimer described the two 'extra' installs as 'User-specific
browser toolbar' and 'Global browser toolbar' before I stopped the
install and it was trying to download more stuff.

Why don't you try it yourself, as opposed to just believing what
Spybot's TeaTimer says?
Even if what you say is correct why do I need this sidebar, if I
have messenger running I can see my buddy list in its window

If you prefer not to have the buddy list window showing all the
time, but you want to see it in your browser, for example, then the
sidebar would be useful.
and if I don't have messenger running why would I need my list.

You wouldn't...that's why the ability to turn it off is provided.
The whole active install process is too opaque and gets people
into the habit of just allowing anything to be installed. It is as
I said wrong thinking and I think sinister.

I suggest you look up the word sinister, and then compare it to the
actual actions of the Yahoo Messenger.

(And lest anyone think that I have some kind of vested interest in
Yahoo Messenger, I use Gaim for all my chatting needs...my only
interest is full and truthful disclosure, as opposed to FUD.)

Your interest is vested no matter what you say. There are posts in messenger
fora I visit and responses to this message elsewhere with experience similar
to mine. Plonk.

Ooh, yes, you've figured me out. I'm really just a Yahoo plant in
this newsgroup--which is why only the other day I was recommending
Miranda and Gaim over Trillian. Because, as all of us Yahoo plants
know, Yahoo has injected super secret backdoors into both of those
projects (which is possible what with them both being open source
projects and all). Not only does it allow remote control by any top
secret Yahoo plant, but it uses your monitor to send out frequencies
which interrupt brain patterns and leads to brain control!! It's all
very "sinister" and "wrong thinking", but it's just how they work!!

Oh, damn, I've just given out all of Yahoo's secrets. I'm sure they
will be very unhappy now, and it'll be right back to the brainwash
camps for me. Oh, the humanity.
There are posts in messenger fora I visit and responses to this
message elsewhere with experience similar to mine.

Doesn't make you any less wrong.

Hmm...I've heard that ignorance is bliss, but what happens when
ignorance and paranoia collide? I guess I'll never know, what with
you having plonked me and all...

I think reason is a new alliance betw. Y! & MSoft.
Install the version 5.6 and you'll have no problem, as I did weeks ago - using
Mozilla/Firebird of course.

I uploaded Yahoo Messenger version 5.6.0.1 to yousendit.com/ - get it:
<http://s2.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=A532EFC1CCE3EABEC8C05A37E9325DDE>

Get new IDs when you become a member of a Yahoo-group like:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cia-drugs/ or
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/impeach-bush/ or
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/funny-pictures/ ....
