xpw/ sp2 clean install problems

I recently started a clean install on a new drive in a dell 8100. With help I
made it to the activation section ok and opted to do activation later. I
loaded Mcafee virus scan s.w. I started noticing problems . My modem (rural
dial up connection only) was operating at 1/2 speed of previous me
installation so I started adjusting various property settings as per
microsoft document and couldn't resolve. Then I noticed unsupported device /
no driver loaded in "other devices" in device manager. Further investigation
I found in event viewer that there were acpi errors , com+event system
errors, and" windows management files may be missing or moved". I've noticed
xp hanging up during shut down sometimes.
I've 10 days left to activate and I 'm thinking that I should go ahead and
update and let the modem chew it out for hours with the updates and see where
I end up .
Any suggestions?
thanks

If you are talking about a Dell Inspiron 8100:

1. If you used the Dell XP CD, you should not have to be activating but
if you are getting the prompt for activation please be aware that there
is a known issue with this machine. Activation problems occur because
of a conflict between the XP activation component and the Inspiron
8100's graphics adapter. As a work around, boot the installation in
base-video mode by :

a. Run msconfig and select boot.ini tab.
b. Select boot entry and then select the /BASEVIDEO check box, Apply
& OK. Reboot.

After your computer reboots with the /basevideo option, you can activate
Windows. After activation, remove the /basevideo option from boot.ini
and reboot.

2. After you installed the operating system, you should have installed
the Dell drivers for your motherboard (chipset), special laptop
software, video, audio, network, etc. Get these drivers from Dell's
site if you don't have the Dell Resource CD.
